A useful guide on watercolour techniques,
By Mar Calpena (Barcelona, Spain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watercolor School (Learn as You Go) (Hardcover)
As a novice watercolour painter and devoted bibliophile, I have found a new way of spending my hard-earned money: Watercolour books. However, this one might be one of the last I buy, as it's really useful. bought the book yesterday and I am delighted with it. The advice on how to do things is sound, and this is a book that encourages you to find your own style and shows you how the same image may be rendered in such a different way by different people. Unlike other books I own, this one is not only a set of beautiful pictures. In fact, I didn't like some of the art displayed in it, but this is in fact a plus, as it shows the variety of styles and effects you can achieve with watercolour. I know that there are other techniques not displayed in this book, but as a beginning step it's definitely worth every penny. It's got a lot of demos (which are implicitly exercises) and it might end up being a classic on the subject.

The Best Book For The Beginner,
By "jenb859" (Jasper, Al) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watercolor School (Learn as You Go) (Hardcover)
Being a beginning watercolorist I knew I needed some help, so I searched all over for a good book on the subject but was unsuccessful. Then I found this book and I'll have to say it is excellent. It covers many of the techenics that new watercolorist need to know like how to stretch paper, the use of masking fluid, how to set up a still life, and how the watercolors work. I recommend this book to everbody that's interested in becoming the serious watercolorist.

Watercolor School by Hazel Harrison is an excellent resource,

This review is from: Watercolor School (Learn as You Go) (Hardcover)
This book is an exceptional resource for the watercolorist. I highly recommend this book for both beginner and advanced artists. Terms are explained in plain English. Many watercolor techniques are reviewed and numerous artist's works are described in detail. Hazel Harrison has also written Acrylic School and Pastel School for Readers Digest, and they are all excellent reference sources. I recommend them to all my students.

A definite must, beginner or expert,
By Kate Holmes "Consignment Guru" (Sarasota, FL USA) - See all my reviews

I really should buy a new copy. My copy's been open on my painting table so often, it's been so splashed with Viridian and Quinacridone Red and enthusiastic sweat that I can barely read it! An absolute must-have.

This review is from: Watercolor School Pb (Reader's digest learn-as-you-go guide) (Paperback)
This book is for the beginner and does a great job of starting off with the basics and then some exercises to do as you go getting one familiar with the materials and processes. I love the way it's "learn as you go" style, not with a "jump in and do your own thing" type of exercise, but a practical step by step guide with why we do what we do. It's simple to understand, not a lot of artists' fluff, and easy to do. Worth the price. lchristoffer

Over the years, I have bought many watercolor books to help me get started painting with watercolor. I wish I had found this one first. It has the basics and more. The techniques and demonstrations are illustrated extremely well. The text is easy to follow, too. In some cases, it even gives two approaches to painting the same subject matter. Good color theory, too. I know I will use this now and into the future.

This book has good basics for the beginning watercolor painter. It discusses selection of brushes, paper, color mixing and other beginning basics. It covers landscape, still life, figures, and portraits. A plus to me was the fact that this book has no nude art. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the art of watercolor.

I have taken painting lessons for other media and wanted to learn
watercolor. I took one fast lesson in Florida and needed a book to help me to remember techniques. This book is wonderful. It reinforced what I needed to know after only one personal lesson and the book took over after my three hour lesson. Very complete course.

"Watercolor School" by Hazel Harrison states on its book jacketthat it is "a practical guide to painting with watercolor." This is an accurate description of this really useful book. It is complete in every aspect, and even for the more experienced watercolorist it can be used as an exceptionally valuable informational source. What more can I say? It's a great book.
