One of my favorites!,

This review is from: Watercolor for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter (Practical Art Books) (Paperback)
This is a comprehensive book well worth your time and money. I especially like the instructional step-by-step color demonstrations which include still life, landscape, and figures and portraits.

I am an adult beginner exploring watercolor painting. This book has really good information about getting started. I especially liked the information on paint characteristics, perspective, color value, and focal point. I have purchased booklets from my local hobbie shop chain that are much more expensive and give less comprehensive explanations. I found this book very helpful.

This is an excellent introduction for the beginner. I also love her art. Other excellent, but more advanced, books are "The Art of Watercolor" by Charles Le Clair and "The Watercolorists Essential Notebook" by Gordon MacKenzie.

watercolor for the serious beginner,

I have just joined up with AMAZON and am so excited about the selection of art technique books. I teach in the water medium and own many of the books listed. There is one review I would like to add and that is "Watercolor for The Serious Beginner",by Mary Whyte, 1997. The title sounds simple, however there is a a wealth of info for the students as well as accomplished artists. It is far from the basic of basics, which we all need periodically. I have viewed Mary's watercolors at a gallery in Charleston, S.Carolina. The paintings place you in there settings of great nostalgic memories and personalities. You would like to visit with Mary and tell her you, too, have been there. Mary shares all of her w/c knowledge in this book, and has been published in American Artist Watercolor as well a monthly publication, focusing on portraiture. Her still life ptgs. in the book are equally as instructional again and again.

I purchased this book based on previous reviews. The book is good, however it's a lot of information for a "beginner." The book is compact, could be a little bigger for better illustration.

Helpful but not a must-have,

I liked this book because it gives you lots of ideas to think about as you grow and learn to watercolor paint. However, I didn't feel it was a must-have for my collection. The pictures are beautiful and the ideas are good to remember but if you're really enthusiastic about painting, I think you'll be doing all these things she speaks about anyway. I guess it's a good book to have if you need a reminder once in a while.

Mary Whyte writes and instructs as well as she paints. I think this is very rare. It is not possible to be disappointed with this book. Enjoy!

This is a good book to learn a variety of techniques in watercolor painting. This was for my teenage daughter who enjoys watercolor painting, so she can expand her level of techniques. She sat for hours going through the book to learn and study what it had to teach her.
