4.0 out of 5 stars Partial but evocative glimpse of the most famous Realmscity, May 1, 2000
This review is from: Waterdeep and the North (AD&D Fantasy Roleplaying, Forgotten Realms, FR1) (Paperback)
Here it is, the classic sourcebook that started it all! Ed Greenwood explores the most intriguing city of adventure for AD&D - Waterdeep, the colossal tradeport on the verge of the Savage Frontier! Details include the dungeons below, famous personages, endless lines of shops, huge reams of intrigue and plot ideas and adventure hooks, and yes, the colossal map of the city itself... a wonderful sourcebook for all DMs, because it shows how to make the cities even more interesting than the dungeons!

5.0 out of 5 stars An early look at Faerun's greatest city, March 17, 2011
This review is from: Waterdeep and the North (AD&D Fantasy Roleplaying, Forgotten Realms, FR1) (Paperback)
The first product expanding on the old Gray Box, in many ways, FR1 has yet to be topped. Packaged with a beautiful poster map of the City of Splendors, this 64 page book also has sewer maps and floor plans of typical buildings inside the cover. The book includes a brief survey of the city's environs in the Sword Coast North, including the Citadel of Many Arrows, Leilon, and Loudwater among other entries. The next chapter lays out Waterdeep, with a history of the city (not as complete as the 3.5e City of Splendors), a few current events to get DMs started on an urban campaign, and details of the local politics and laws, including information on known and suspected Lords and the Waterdeep penal code. Next is a listing of all 200-odd buildings identified on the map and the dozens of features and hazards to found in the sewers. After that we have a discussion of life in the big city, including temples, a price list for common goods and services, a list of known fences, and lots of other local flavor. Then there are chapters devoted to guilds and factions, noble houses, tons of NPCs. Last up is number of adventure hooks for parties either based in or simply passing through Faerun's greatest metropolis.

This a great supplement, but almost completely unnecessary if you already have the 3/3.5e City of Splendors and Silver Marches.
