GET OVER IT,
By Numbfeet (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watering Ghost Garden (Audio CD)
Creeper lagoon makes some of the catchiest and most soothing guitar pop since I can remember. I don't know of any band that i would rather listen to when it comes to dream pop. Every song on this EP is excellent and highly reccommended. Yet, despite this, whiny indie brats are finding any way to trash it.Yeah, it's hi-fi. Incredibly Hi-fi for that matter. So, it only makes sense that old Creeper Lagoon fans are a little turned off. Get over the fact that it's a little over produced. And when you do, you will realize that the songs are still catchy and dreamy in their essence, and they haven't really changed their song structures. If Creeper becomes a commercial entity, they will still have my support. It is not like they've changed their style much at all. Only the production. Get over your oversized low-fi only ego's and just listen.

Moving through the boggy lagoon to the blue sea,
By Christopher A. Anderson (Overland Park, KS United States) - See all my reviews

Creeper Lagoon's first album "I Become Small and Go", was a CD filled with every imaginable instrument possible, while at the same time still maintaining that lo-fi feel, sort of a happy-go-lucky Sebadoh/Folk Implosion. Beneath the layers of headphone sounds are catchy and intense rythms whose meaning is at times lost in the music, which isn't always a bad thing. With the new EP, you wish they would hurry up and put out more. Songs like "Centipede Eyes" and "My Friends Adore You" show their growth as quite ingenious studio workers, who I can only imagine put to good use their Dreamworks cash. Their music is often the kind you might hear at a fun little party where everyone is laidback but energetic, no airs are put on, but they want to lay out some good sounds. The power of their guitar work can be much more truly appreciated live, where they are currently out with The Dandy Warhols.

I miss Creeper Lagoon.,

One or three times an album, Creeper Lagoon would write the perfect pop song.
Regardless of whether or not you like the rest of the mid-tempo, glossy rock of theirs that would be perfect on any summer night sunset drive, "Centipede Eyes" and "Roman Hearts" are worth getting this CD alone.

Nice extension of debut album,

A little more straightforward indie rock, with less drum machine/synth flourish than on I Become Small And Go. Still, it sounds great, very well produced, with lots of atmosphere. Perhaps an indication of where the band is headed on their next full-length. "Centipede Eyes" is as good as anything on the debut CD. Every song on here is good to very good. A must-have for Creeper fans.

The Real Deal,

This EP ROCKS!! If they were using "dreamworks money", why was it recorded and produced pretty much themselves. 6 great songs. What else should there be? This is way better than I Become Small and Go.

I'll just say it took me three hours to take the first track off of single song repeat play. I think my roommate hates me now.

BEAUTY IN THE GLOOM LAGOON,

IF YOUR NOT A CREEPER LAGOON FAN IT'S BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T HEARD THEM. WATERING GHOST GARDEN IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS I BECOME SMALL AND GO. SLAP ON SOME HEADPHONES AND THE MUSIC WILL KEEP YOU IN A DREAM WORLD FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY. OR IF YOUR LIKE ME, FOR LIFE. I'M PARTIAL TO TRACK 1. CENTAPEDE EYES. WHICH I FIRST HEARD IN A VERY PRIVATE(ABOUT 40 PEOPLE) CONCERT AT THE WOW HALL IN EUGENE OREGON, ABOUT A YEAR AGO, AND COULDN'T WAIT TO HEAR IT AGAIN. THIS ALBUM IS A BIT DIFFERENT FROM THEIR NICKLE BAG RELEASE, I BECOME SMALL AND GO. THIS TIME THEY DID NOT ENLIST THE HELP ONF THE DUST BROS. AND IT SHOWS. THIS E.P. IS MORE DOWN TO EARTH, AND ON SOME TRACKS, SOUND SLIGHTLY LIKE THE WALLFLOWERS. BUT MORE GLOOMY, OF COURSE. IF YOUR INTO GLOOM ROCK, WATERING GHOST GARDEN WILL MAKE YOU FLOAT AWAY. MY ONLY GRIPE IS THAT THEIR IS ONLY SEVEN SONGS. I GUESS WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MARCH FOR THE NEXT FULL LENGTH ALBUM.

Watered-down Must Pardon...,

...should be the title of this EP. I tried to get into this, I really did. I gave it chance after chance. I'm also not of the camp who feel betrayed by all of the post IBSAG CL output. This is just an uninspired set that screams 'identity crisis.' Wait, it doesn't even have the conviction to scream...this EP half-heartedly whispers it. Sorry guys, but in the end a turd is a turd, and no amount of that opulent Dreamworks polish can hide the smell.

bland and boring,

creeper lagoon needs to decide whether they want to be commercial or artsy, it's that simple. right now they sound like a watered down pavement or worse yet, the wallflowers jr. i don't care about the dreamworks money, no one should. radiohead just made an album full of uncompromising songs for capitol and the flaming lips made the best record of 1999 for warner brothers, so let us not speak of money, sell out, or indie vs. major labels anymore. musically, however, this record is just a big wash of nothingness. give us hooks, give us ambience, for god's sake, give us something. the songs are so half baked, it's like they're hoping that if they add some effects to the mix it will actually help the mix. i also know that i'm not the only one who thinks that singer no. 2 should not sing. somebody get that guy a harmonizer or a pitch bender quick. to sum it up, yeah they do sound like the wallflowers, and, um, that's not good.

would the REAL creeper lagoon please stand up!,

i've been waiting two years for a new creeper release and i must say i'm completely disappointed. this record is like the cowardly lion, tin man, and scare crow all wrapped up in one. the creepers take absolutely no chances. there is no heart from start to finish. and the lyrics, for lack of a better adjective, are a bit dumb. the record is bathed in so much reverb and digital slickness it's like they're trying to compete with radiohead or something. instead they come off sounding like another generic modern rock band. if you haven't bought "i become small and go", well, i suggest you do because that one will not disappoint, i assure you. i don't know what else to say except that i'm so depressed that another great band has bit the dust.
