5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Romance and Fantasy Rolled up in One Great Read, April 30, 2006

This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
Before the full moon wanes, Klaus Lindegren, the fey Prince of Fossegrim must find a human mate and beget his heir or lose his immortality and his kingdom beyond the waterfalls.
Lady Rebecca "Becca" Gildersleeve is fleeing a marriage of convenience to a man she abhors when her carriage turns over in a storm and is almost swept away by the river. Klaus, posing as a foreign count on a visit to England hauls her to safety. The moment he see her, he believes she is the chosen one.
Becca is undeniably attracted to her handsome rescuer and grateful for his protection from her angry father. She is also curious about her mysterious and seductive host. One night, she follows him through the mist to a nearby waterfall. She believes she is dreaming when he dives gloriously naked into the shimmering water.
Torn between his duty to his people and his growing attraction for the woman he must abandon at the end of the moon's last quarter, Klaus assists Becca to deal with her unwanted betrothal. Can Becca accept him for what he is? Can he go against the gods and his destiny? The questions aren't easy and the answers are a surprise.
In this imaginative novel based on Norse mythology, Ms. Thompson brings to life two enchanting worlds: Fossegrim, the world beyond the waterfall, full of strange beauty, ancient magic and exotic creatures-both good and evil; and the parallel world of Regency England. If you like romantic historicals and fantasies, this novel rolls them up into one wonderful read and a keeper of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!, May 21, 2006
This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE, I anxiously awaited Dawn Thompson's next romance. I wasn't disappointed. THE WATERLORD surpassed my expectations. Her story wove historical and fantasy romance into an exciting read. If you've read and liked BRIDE, you'll love THE WATERLORD.

Fans of both historical romance and fantasy will find this a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by Keelia Greer, May 8, 2006
This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)

Lady Rebecca Gildersleeve is fleeing from her father across the stormy Bodmin Moor. Her carriage overturns on the precipice of a gorge.
Out of the tempest-tossed darkness comes Count Klaus Lindegren to pull Lady Rebecca and her Abigail to safety.

The Count is graceful and fluid with a hint of the Otherworld clinging to him. He is of the Fossegrim: creatures driven to find ecstasy with human women and then vanish forever. From their world, humans never returned.

This beautiful tale is told by a master storyteller. Dawn Thompson is an author to watch. Thompson's deft strokes make the time period come alive along with a cast of not-to-be missed characters.

This is a book I couldn't put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 stars if I could, May 13, 2006
This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
I read The Ravencliff Bride and really thought it one of the best books I have read in a long time. So I wondered if the author could do it again. I have to say I loved The Waterlord even more. So I simply cannot wait for The Falcon's Bride.

This author is no on my pre-order list. I loved the lore woven into this tale, very original. Thompson is a star in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drowning in Love, June 9, 2006

This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
Dawn Thompson's tale of destiny and love grabs a reader in the first pages when Lady Rebecca Gildersleeve's carriage crashes and the wonderfully sexy Count Klaus Lindegren sets himself on a path of saving our heroine from her gambling addicted, overbearing father, who has promised her hand as a payment for his losses. Dawn Thompson picks up a brush and paints walk into scenes where you feel the mist engulfing you, the dew laden branches of plants caressing your skin one minute, the next you're being chased by a misguided father and loathsome fiance who makes your skin crawl.

To a person who's afraid of being in water more than kneedeep, I longed to walk into the pools of the Fossegrim and dip into the waters of the paranormal. Great book by a marvelous storyteller.

Like others who have given this book a less than a stellar rating, I also wasn't taken with The Waterlord. I'll admit that the premise was a different one, but I struggled to get through the story. Tne romance aspect hit you like a Mack truck in that the characters were almost immediately in love with one another, and therefore it was terribly unbelievable. The dialogue was tough to get through as were the descriptive scenes. Perhaps Ms. Thompson was trying to give the reader a feel for the time period, but there were too many flowery words in complex form that forced me to re-read passages more than once to figure out what was going on, and to be honest, I rolled my eyes constantly at the dialogue. I'm not giving up on this author as I see she has quite a following, so I will embark on her other titles in hopes that I will be more entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars my new fav author!, June 1, 2006
This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
Wow, is this writer so wonderful or not? I love lore, and I love historical romances that have...well, romance and history. Dawn Thompson delivers in space. I loved the hero, love the chemistry. Where the attraction is more powerful that duty, than reason, than circumstances.

She hooked me from page one and never let me go. I didn't want it to end. I cannot wait for her release in August.

Very Highly recommended. I also highly recommend The Ravencliff Bride. AMAZING!

5.0 out of 5 stars Paranormals that are different, March 23, 2008
This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
Camelot's Destiny (Zebra Debut)My Noble Knight (Zebra Historical Romance)

I have just finished reading three of Dawn Thompson's books and am very impressed by the paranormal worlds she creates that aren't the traditional vamp/urban fantasy.

In "The Ravencliff Bride", the reader is treated to a delicious mix of Gothic/Regency with a changeling hero who fears he might be a were-wolf.
"The Waterlord" provides a completely different kind of setting. The hero here moves in both the mortal and Otherworld at will; however, he is bound to waterfalls or he loses his strength. Finally, in "The Falcon's Bride", we are treated to an unusual time-travel that moves between Regency-set and Medieval...very unusual and very interesting.

Dawn has a fantastic talent for blending the historical with the paranormal and making it a perfect fit.

I highly recommend her books!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystical Realms and Reality Collide, March 4, 2006
This review is from: The Waterlord (Mass Market Paperback)
"The Waterlord" by Dawn Thompson was a much anticipated read for me. I'd not read very many paranormal historicals before so I was glad of the chance to read this tale. Strong characters and beautiful, if somewhat strange, imagery combine to make a fairly good read in this tale based upon the author's splendid research of Norse legends and mythology.

Lady Rebecca Gildersleeve has fled from her home, hoping to avoid an unwanted marriage that is being forced upon her. When her carriage overturns into a dangerously steep gorge, rescue is at had in the sinfully male form of Count Klause Lindegren of Sweden. Becca feels an inexplicable pull towards the stranger and is almost helpless to deny the needs he awakens in her. However, it soon becomes clear that this mysterious Count is not all he appears. Strange moonlit nights reveal mystical tales to her that cannot be possible, tales of the Fossegrim - men driven to precreate with bespelled human females...or could they be true? Rebecca has to determine if she's safe with the Count or better off in the hands of her odious father.

Since I hate to find fault with any book, I'll get my one complaint over with first - the story at times was hard for me to follow, and I backtracked alot (especially in the first half, which was a little slow) to help keep myself straight. Other than that, I came away pretty pleased with my first read by D. Thompson. I've always had a love for different mythologies, so I was glad to see that that is what this story was based upon. Klaus was a very complex character, torn between his duties and obligations to his astral realm and those of his heart and his love for Becca. Becca herself was an interesting heroine, one I thought need a little more common sense at times, but still handled a completely unbelievable situation well. Their attraction was somewhat abrupt, due in part to Klaus's fey drive to procreate, but he tapers his desire for Becca nicely once he realizes she is special to him, in effect earning my respect for not just loving and leaving her. There's a wonderfully forbidden and dangerous atmosphere throughout the story, very much drawing the reader into believing in myths and fairy tales (which we see from this story are not necessarily all sweetness and light). Overall, a very different and very interesting historical romance, one with a unique paranormal element to separate it nicely from other such books. Looking forward to more from this author.
