A wonderful pen,
By David K. Crabtree (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Waterman Phileas Red Marble Medium Point Fountain Pen - 19714WB (Office Product)
This pen looks more expensive than it is, feels comfortable in the hand, and writes very well. I happen to like a full barreled pen and the cartridge style makes refilling easy.If you are looking for a fountain pen, this one would be a good choice. I'm going to add the roller ball and pencil in the same style and color to my collection as there are times they are needed. I can guarentee that you will get comments when you pull this one out of your jacket. Some said that it writes rather wide so I just did a comparison of three pens to see just how wide the basic writing lines are. I used the Waterman Phileas Red, a Uni-ball Signo Micro 207, and the Uni Premier Jetstream. My test, on a piece of Ampad steno book paper, showed that the Waterman and Micro 207 were the same width, and that the Jetstream was noticeably wider. Asumming that the 207 designates a 7mm ball size, I think that the Waterman's Med nip yields that same width. Commonly a 5mm is called fine and the 9mm is bold or wide. So it seems the "Med" designate for the Waterman holds up. Well that's just my rather un-scentific, using a big magnifying glass and plenty of bright light look at it.

This is a good fountain pen for people who know they like writing with them, but aren't longtime fountain pen devotees. If you're not sure you'll like a fountain pen, I'd recommend the excellent (and cheap) disposable fountain pens by Varsity. You can find them here on amazon. The Waterman Phileas is a beautiful pen. It does not look cheap at all. The red marbling is gorgeous, and the gold accents are very rich-looking. The pen writes quite well, and quite smoothly. The nib is not at all scratchy. It's actually a fairly thick medium, which helps avoid scratchiness -- although the line probably won't be fine enough for some people's tastes. If I were a more experienced fountain penner, I might buy a fine point, but that would almost certainly be scratchy in my non-expert hand. The ink it ships with is decent. It's a fairly watery blue, but dries fast. All fountain pen inks are on the watery side, in my experience, so this ink isn't particularly bad. The pen also comes with a converter so you can bottle-fill with a nicer ink. The one negative I can add about this pen is that when I received it, the ink cartridge had leaked all over the interior of the box. This did not inspire confidence about putting this pen in my shirt pocket. As it turns out, though, I've been carrying this pen daily for a couple weeks now, and I haven't had any problems with leakage. I think it's possible that the ink simply froze during shipping, due to incredibly cold temperatures. I'd definitely recommend this pen.

Sharp looking pen,

The pen is great looking and feels good as you write with it. However, the medium point on the pen comes across rather wide in writing.I have good Levenger fountain pen ink and I am a bit disappointed with the way the pen writes. I think a narrower nib would be much better on this pen.
