2.0 out of 5 stars Neat concept but doesn't quite fit the bill
Yes, it is water proof, but that's the only way in which it met my expectations. The sound quality was poor and the volume level was laughable. Not at all what I was expecting. I returned it.

I bought the Ego to use while sailing in a small boat and while at the pool. Recently, I started kayaking in ocean water and took the Ego with me.

The sound quality is much, much better than I expected. It produces good bass and treble for a product of this size that is water resistant.

Water resistance is also very good. I've dropped it into the ocean at least twice while kayaking. Both times, it was completely submerged and it went in face down. While kayaking, water continually dribbled over it as well. No water entered into the unit and it continued playing my music with no problems at all despite the fact that the speakers were wet.

While it works with all Ipods (except the iphone), it has a standard audio plug and thus can work with any MP3 player or radio that will fit inside the compartment.

It also has a waterproof membrane that lets you control your ipod by pushing on the click wheel and scrolling through your songs or changing the volume. In addition, it has its own volume buttons that do not control the Ipod volume.

My only complaint is that once the unit gets wet, the ability scroll using the scroll wheel disappears. I guess that once it is wet, the membrane isn't conducting your finger swipes to the ipod. You can still click, you just can't control your IPOD's volume or scroll through songs. I assume that this is a function of the physics of water and I don't really blame Ego for this. The unit has its own volume control which works independent of the Ipod.

So, as long as you choose your playlist in advance and set the Ipod volume at a correct level before everything gets wet, you can still control the volume using the volume buttons on the Ego and you can still skip songs by clicking on the click wheel. However, if you unintentionally set your volume too low or you want to choose another playlist, you'll have to dry it and your fingers off before you can fix it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works just like it should, July 10, 2007

I have been using the Ego Soundcase for a couple months now, and I can safely say it definitely works like it should. I personally like the retro-feel of the clear plastic case, and i'll comment on the sound and waterproof nature of the speakers

First, the sound.

The sound is much better than what you would expect from the tiny speakers. Its decent for use outdoor use, and unless you're standing next to a waterfall you should be able to hear your music by the pool. The bass is not as loud as some competitors but you can hear it fine, the mid and treble compares with the others just fine.
overall volume is a lot louder than needed, especially if you use it in the shower or somewhere indoors or private.

Moving on to Waterproofness.

I use my Soundcase in the shower mostly. I've read the above review and I can say that he has not used the showcase at all! I have dunked mine in the tub, the pool, taken a shower splashing it, and floated around with it in the pool. My Soundcase has survived through all of that with my ipod 100% dry. The only thing you have to do when taking it out is to dry your hands first, which is not a big deal to me. An awesome effect is to splash a little bit of water onto the speakers while something bassy like techno or hip hop is playing and watching the water from the bass.

I was pretty scared about dropping it in water at first so I tried it without the ipod. NO problems at all. then i did it with the ipod inside. NO problems at all. my only gripe is that it cant go more than a meter underwater but i dont think i'd really want to do that anyway.

all in all a solid product. A great companion in the shower for me, and livens up the place when i go to the pool.

I've had the EGO sound case for about a month, and it's really pretty decent. The sound is better than I expected, and not directional at all so you can still hear pretty well if it's pointed away from you. I don't believe I've gotten this wet, but I feel pretty comfortable taking it to the beach and the pool. The click wheel is functional, but not great, so the best approach is to use a playlist so you don't have to go searching too often. One drawback is volume -- it's good for listening when you are close, but it doesn't pump enough volume for, say, a large group.

5.0 out of 5 stars works great, January 12, 2008

Bought this for my girlfriend for a Christmas present. She has an ipod and I have a Dell mp3 player. I can use my Dell mp3 player on this because it uses the headphone jack instead of the connection on the bottom of the ipod. I choose this particular speaker case for that one reason. Too many devices are used exclusively with ipods and the rest of us are left with fewer choices. Im glad I found this one. The speakers can be VERY loud, so if you are unsure as to whether or not you can or cant hear these speakers while in the shower, I promise you can.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty cool i gotta tell ya, July 24, 2007
This review is from: eGo Waterproof Sound Case with Dual Speakers for iPod (Clear) (Electronics)
it sounds awsome for its size but let me tell you... this speaker will only float in a pond where there is no ripples in the water... as soon as water touches the top it drounds the speaker and it mutes them... the nice feater is that its shatter proof and that you can take it wherever... battery life..eh... its ok.. it might last as long as the other reviews say but after a couple days of use the sound just isnt the same...
peace!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good sound, exactly what I was looking for, October 11, 2008

I'm really happy with this product. It was exactly what I was looking for. I think of it as an "mp3 shower radio", so I can't speak for it's ability to be fully submerged underwater. But I know that as a shower radio, it's pretty much perfect. It's definitely waterproof enough for the shower.

It comes with size adapters and spacers for just about any kind of iPod imaginable, and since it uses the headphone jack, the connector type you have is not an issue.

It also has surprisingly good sound and volume for such a small item. Again, I'm using this in the shower, so it's plenty loud enough for me (it can even get *too* loud with some songs!). If you were planning to use this for the beach, or a small gathering, you may need something a bit bigger and more powerful though.

All in all, the quality, construction, sound, documentation, and packaging of this item are great. Highly recommended!

Just don't throw away the little black foam pad that's in the package.. That's a spacer for use with thinner iPods (iPod Video, etc.) I almost made that mistake! :)

I will be using this for all my fishing excursions on our bass boat. Like others have mentioned before me, don't be expecting the sound blow to you away. The maximum setting is a comfortable volume that you can enjoy if you have this near you without disturbing others who are at least 30 feet away. The quality of the sound is perfect - no vibrations or scratchy noises from the speakers. The whole unit is really neat looking since it is all clear and you can see everything inside it. Please be advise that this unit is not as small you you might think from looking at the item image.

Not often do you get a device that actually works as billed. The Ego gives a very good sound. Waterproof, floats in the pool. Pretty good volume. Comes with carrying strap, protective cloth bag. looks great and reliable.

5.0 out of 5 stars EGO Waterproof iPod speakers, August 6, 2007

My husband and I wanted to take our music salmon fishing in Alaska - this was the perfect way to do it! We were on a boat for 2 weeks and never had to worry about the iPod or speakers getting wet. The only thing I wish is that the volume could be higher (or maybe it can be and I couldn't figure it out!) but other than that I would recommend this item for anyone who wants to share their iPod music at the pool, beach, lake, etc. etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of What's Availible, June 1, 2008

I received this as a gift 6 months ago, and it works great for listening to music in the shower. The membrane over the iPod controls is the best way I have seen for controlling the iPod within a waterproof case since it allows you to still use the click wheel and all the iPod's normal controls. The sound is usually pretty good as long as I have the "Sound Check" feature on my iPod turned on as the instructions tell you to do. My only complaint is that the volume does not go that high--fine for listening in the shower, but probably not loud enough for a pool party or something like that. Otherwise, this is a great product overall!
