Christopher Hawkins' first novel is a wonderful surprise. The beautifully descriptive story places you in Coastal Mexico, where you can practically taste the salt water and feel the sun beating down. Surfing is central to the story, but you do not have to be a surfer to appreciate the relationship of man and ocean. Hawkins describes the sensation of surfing so well, that you will believe you have done it yourself. Most importantly, however, the story grips you from the very first page. It has a refreshing lack of violence, yet still manages suspense and tension to the end. You will find yourself effortlessly immersed in the characters as you turn the pages to find out their fate.

This book made me want to grab my backpack and surfboard and head off into the great unknown. The scenes of Mexico and the Pacific are beautiful. I'm still thinking about it days later.

Hawkins presents decent characters that for transparent reasons have high potential relationships that are all cut short. The ackwardness of mis-timed love served as a great backdrop while the scenary and surfing took center stage. The vividness of his discriptions of wave riding left my hair wet and made me want to read every paragraph slowly. The actual crisis was not developed as much as all the foreshadow led to believe that it would be. The coastal breezes of Mexico and Dos Equis disolved any real threats. The Waters End pushes plot to the margin to make room for things we all care about the moment we hit the water and the road: friendships along the way and waves. A great piece of fiction worth the time and purchase.

When I ordered this book I wasnt sure what the story was about. It is a well written story about a young man, in the crossroads of his life who after a family death takes the surf trip he has dreamed about all his life in Mexico. On the trip he meets a girl and the adventure begins.
I really enjoyed the travel in this story, the author made the story and places really come alive with a lot of real emotions.

One of the best things about Christopher Hawkins's 2001 novel, "The Water's End," by Trafford Publishing, is that you don't have to be a surfer to enjoy it. But I'll tell you this you sure can appreciate it that much more by being one. Like any good novelist Hawkins spent his time, paid his dues and researched his story thoroughly before bringing it to print. The prose caught me from the beginning--Mr. Hawkins writes the sort of descriptions that are so good you want to read them twice. He is clearly an expert on his subject matter. If you surf, you will understand. If you don't, you will understand. THE WATER'S END was a story I loved to escape to. Highly recommended.
