Book Description

WATERS FALL
The anatomy of an affair. The price of forgiveness. The beauty of grace.

Jake doesn’t remember what it means to be a champion. Nora doesn’t know how much longer she can tread water before she goes under.

Their fairytale marriage is hurtling toward a tragic end.

Then Tristan sweeps in—all feelings and fire and freedom—and Nora is carried out to where the waters flow fast and deep. Nora knows she’s risking far more than just her heart….

When it all comes crashing down, Jake and Nora are left standing amidst the ruins of everything they’ve built together. Will they walk away, or stay and fight for their happily-ever-after?

Note: WATERS FALL is written from a Christian worldview.

WATERS FALL excerpt:

Nora’s bones ached in the frigid water, and her lungs thrummed in desperation for oxygen, but she resisted the urge to push to the surface. She tipped her head back and gazed up at the warped glow above her, the sunlight flaunting its promise of warmth. The water roared as it flung itself over the stacked boulders of the falls and into the pool where she was submerged; the cacophony surrounded her, shutting out all sounds from above. The kids would be calling for her by now, and if she stayed under much longer, Jake would come after her. She’d long ago breathed out the last of her air so she could sink to the rocky bed of the pool. Her long dark hair drifted up around her head, reminding her of mermaid stories, and her arms floated out to her sides of their own volition. If she could just keep from kicking her legs, she might be able to stay there…longer.

It had started out as a game of ‘who can hold their breath the longest,’ and Nora knew she’d win, hands down, even against Jake. A choir girl—first school, then church—her lung capacity was in tip-top condition because she worked to keep it that way. On the third round, though, something tripped inside her head, like a live wire sending a string of sparks skittering across her thoughts, and she was suddenly and acutely aware of the thrill of this watery cocoon, of being out of breath, of the cold, and of the churning chaos just a few feet away from where she waited in a strange state of suspended animation.

~ ~ ~

Today was the first time Nora had ever intentionally opened her eyes under the water here without her goggles on. The torrent from the falls kept the pool stirred up and cloudy, and she’d always been afraid of debris blinding her.

But the swirling specks of silt and sand, glittering and pale, added to the otherworld sensation that held her in its grip. What would happen if she just opened her mouth and drew the fairy dust water into her lungs?

Suddenly the very thought of breathing had her clamoring for the surface, bursting up out of the water with a great gulp that left her coughing and gasping. She looked up to find she’d drifted to the far side of the waterhole where there was no easy place to climb out. Across from her, Leslie scrambled from the top of the large boulder where she’d obviously been perched to try to locate Nora, and Felix, tears of panic streaming down his face, stood ankle deep at the edge the pool, helpless in his youth. Jake, treading water out where she’d first gone under, couldn’t seem to make up his mind whether to come to her aid or go back to comfort the kids.

Nora waved him free, and he grimaced at her before making his way to Felix. He stood with his arm around the boy, his other hand up to shield his eyes from the glint of the sun off the water as he watched her, waiting for her to come back to them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In a story that can only be called raw and amazing, 'Waters Fall' is certainly a book that will make you flinch. It has infidelity, pain, bitterness, and is so well told that Becky Doughty now has fans under her hooks.... Doughty's writing is truly what is missing from fiction these days." - The Examiner

About the Author

Biography Becky Doughty writes about people who live on the edge; that fine line where hope and despair meet, where grace becomes truly amazing. Becky is married to her champion of 25-plus years, and they have three children, two of whom are grown and starting families of their own. They all live within a few miles of each other in Southern California. They share their lives with too many animals, a large vegetable garden, and a very strange underground concrete room that they're determined was built for dark and sinister purposes....

3.0 out of 5 stars So wanted to love this, but... June 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
"She was so confused with what was wrong with it that she couldn't relish in its beauty," as well as putting God first and keeping your eyes and hearts open for Him are the lessons of this novel, however, I do wish Doughty had expedited this teaching. Throughout the book, you got to know Nora & Jake well, but it became a bit redundant and laborious to get through. Doughty may have meant to put the reader through this feeling, as I'm sure it's how those struggling through trials of a strained marriage may feel while entrenched in it, but it was a bit much! Emotionally drowning, these characters and their ceaseless bickering, pouting and confusion led me to want to drown myself; literally. By the end, I was so sick of both Nora and Jake that I couldn't wait for the story to end, and really didn't care if they got back together or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing writing April 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely loved this book! Becky Doughty writes in such an intense way that I had to remind myself that I wasn't a character in the story. The way she left the ending leaves you with an opportunity of hope. I could not put this book down. I have never been in such a situation as the lead character, however, it taught me a lot in what men and women need in their own marriages. Must read for any MAN or WOMAN!

5.0 out of 5 stars True to life March 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Very well written. I loved Becky's style. She has an amazing insight into one little sin at a time and how each party needs to own their own stuff and quit blaming. This is not a feel good read, but I would recommend it and have for the truth it imparts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and Well-written March 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The author doesn't hesitate to write about real people - Christians who are going through struggles and have failed their spouses and families over and over again. The characters are not stereotypes of Christians, they are real, flawed, people. Their journey is more common than most Christians might admit, and that is refreshing. I really loved the book and couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of marriage! May 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I have read this book 3 times and each time I read it, I was amazed at how Becky Doughty wrote this very powerful story. A story of any couple in America, struggling with marriage because of job loss or one spouse not working to satisfy the other. This story is about affairs, forgiveness, love, fighting for your marriage, and Becky Doughty also touches on alcoholism.
I guarantee if your marriage is struggling or you know someone who is, this book is for them! This book is for MEN & WOMEN! Great book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story of forgiveness and grace April 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The story touched on a sensitive subject. Becky was able to bring to light the pain of an affair, but also able to turn the story into one of forgiveness and grace. She did a great job of making it believable. I would highly recommend this book to someone in an affair or one contemplating an affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Water Falls Hits the Right Nerve March 23, 2014
By DMartin
Format:Kindle Edition
Doughty's looks deeply into the hearts of regular people who make all the wrong decisions. The characters are embraceable and believable. Waters Fall flows easily off the page (yeah, i had to use that pun). Doughty's style is fresh and crisp. Both my spouse and I enjoyed her latest book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unusual book- and very worth the read! July 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book when it was free at the recommendation of a friend... I am really glad that I did, as I would typically stay far away from anything that remotely sounds like "romance." The author manages to tackle a difficult and painful topic with grace. She manages the two different perspectives of husband and wife very well- there is never a question who is speaking, and their different thoughts and viewpoints are well articulated. I appreciated that while her topic matter could have easily degenerated into a typical romance or become too erotic reading for a middle aged momma like me, she managed to portray the emotions of the characters without too many details.

This is a very different sort of story- and it does not fit typical classifications. It is not a romance, not a typical feel-good Christian lit, not a drama. Just a story of a damaged marriage, and the family trying to work through it. Well done!
