Book Description

August 1, 2009

Waterside Cottages showcases fourteen romantic waterside retreats from coast to coast. Bungalows near the water tend to be snug and modest with exteriors painted in sun-reflecting whites, nautical blues, or playful colors. The interiors of these houses likewise avoid formality in favor of a casual approach. This home decorating book takes you to tidy New England beach cottages with bright tropical bungalows to a boathouse on the steep pine-studded banks of Michigan's Kalamazoo River.

Waterside Cottages defines the attributes of successful coastal decorating, so that anyone, anywhere, can create a casual atmosphere, even when the nearest body of water is a thousand miles away. Whether you're wanting to decorate a living room in a relaxed island beach style, re-do a kids bedroom with a nautical flair, or give your sea or lakeside kitchen a needed update there are decorating ideas for a variety of tastes. Decorators will find inspiration for shabby chic style to americana, tropical palm tree paradise, and even Cape Cod designs.

  • Boathouse on Lake Michigan
  • SeaSide Home on Bethany Beach

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Waterside Cottages defines the attributes of successful coastal decorating, so that anyone, anywhere can create a casual waterfront atmosphere, even when the nearest body of water is a thousand miles away.

Waterside property holds an undeniable appeal, as do the cozy, casual dwellings that exist there. But waterside style need not--and often is not--confined to residences within walking distance of an ocean or lake. The details are what truly give cottages that elusive quality known as coziness. Cottages near the water tend to be snug and modest, with exteriors painted in sun-reflecting whites, nautical blues, or playful colors. The interiors of these houses likewise avoid formality in favor of a casual approach. For many cottage owners, the goal is to create the illusion that their décor is somehow "thrown together," albeit very tastefully.

From tidy New England beach cottages to bright tropical bungalows to a boathouse on the steep, pine-studded banks of the Kalamazoo River, Waterside Cottages showcases thirteen romantic havens, giving you inspiration for creating your own cozy waterside home.

More About the Author

Some of you may recognize me from the photos that were printed on the editor's page of Cottage Style, Romantic Living, Country Victorian and Flower Gardens magazine.

For the past twenty-five years, I have produced magazines for Harris Publications in New York City. Fifteen years ago my family moved from Brooklyn to a rural suburb of Northern Virginia, about 25 miles from Washington DC. It was quite a change!

I wanted my son who was six years old at the time to have a more country lifestyle. So, while he learned how to raise chickens (for eggs only!) and grow vegetables, I learned tele-commuting skills and how to juggle a cup of tea, an over- stuffed purse and a laptop on a fast-moving Amtrak train on my bi-monthly trips to the New York offices.

My husband learned that commuting on a daily basis was even worse than he feared. My mother, who gave up her city apartment and moved into her own apartment on the lower level of our house, discovered that she needed to make carefully-planned shopping lists because the nearest grocery was a twenty-minute drive away.

In 2007, after twenty-five years of editing decorating and gardening magazines, I decided to write a book on Waterside Cottages and work on some freelance assignments.

It was published in July 2009. Now, when I'm not doing book signings, I'm busily at work on my next book. Stay tuned...

5.0 out of 5 stars waterside cottages July 9, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I own an ungodly amount of decorating books and so I am very selective when it comes to adding another one to my collection. Waterside Cottages has now gone to the top of my list. It is a pure delight, filled with beautiful photos and helpful commentary. I highly recommend this book to any and all who long for an ocean cottage of their own or who are interested in seaside decorating.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is The Real Deal January 9, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Finally....the beachy cottage look/book I've been wanting. The others out there in this genre fell way short - but this one delivers. A true gem filled with beauty heart and soul. If you like a more romantic, vintage look, this is the one for you too.
