Druggie Fresh!,

A contender for 2004 hip-hop album of the year (see also Kanye West and Madvillain). Hard core beats and horror core lyrics are back. Eminem's nemesis, Cage (Weathermen) and Tame One (Artifacts) are a better pairing than Cocoa Brovas. Add production by Def Jux all-stars El-P, RJD2 and Camu Tao and you have an instant classic.

The drugs are working,

Concept albums are always risky and rarely work but after hearing Masta Ace's beautiful Long Hot Summer, 2004 might be the year that Hip-Hop finally gets it right. This is another great concept album. It never sounds forced, its almost as though the fact that all the songs are drug related is a complete coincidence. However the tracks all fit together to create a dark yet playful album that you need to listen to from start to end to fully appreciate.
The two "brothers" work well together even though they have different styles. Tame One is more your classic rapper MC (bar the subject matter of his rhymes) relying on a strong voice and an effortless delivery that is reminiscent of Kool G Rap at times. Cage is the crazy one, he's a shock core rapper who uses his ability to create dark/outlandish imagery to grab your attention. The production on the album is excellent. The Leak Brothers enlisted an all star team of producers to lace them with the perfect soundtrack for their Waterworld ride. J-Zone, RJD2, Mighty Mi and Camu Tao are all in top form on this album. My bad for ever doubting that Mighty Mi and Camu Tao would be able to hang with the rest of this allstar cast. Needless to say, they hold it down beautifully. With a running time of only 42 minutes you best believe there is no space for fillers. Even Tame One's interpretation of "Lodi Dodi" which has a less than inspiring beat is made excellent by his crazy lyrics. Standout tracks however are the title track, Delerium and the depressingly dark Dead. With great beats, excellent MCing and a concept that holds the whole album together Waterworld is a definite contender for Indie album of the year.
