My short playlist just got longer, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Waves Are Dancing (Audio CD)
When I want metal, I want something gripping but still melodic and musical. I've had great luck with the folk/Viking metal subgenres, where the reference standard is Ensiferum and related acts like Wintersun. It can be hard to see where folk metal ends and melodic death metal begins, and I got "Waves Are Dancing" by Holy Blood in a gamble to expand my playlist, and was *richly* rewarded. This is what I think "folk" metal ought to sound like, with lush use of traditional melodies and instruments, and well-crafted vocal harmonies that compliment the vocals (which are harsh but carefully restrained). The overall effect is immersive and even atmospheric, but I guarantee these boys from the Ukraine are METAL in the best sense of the term.
(It's also ear-opening to hear an album this good impelled by Christian ideas, though with the lyrics in Ukrainian that may not matter directly.)
