5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Resist, November 2, 2008
By
I couldn't resist writing a review for this. It's too good.

If you're familiar with Gojira, their older albums, then you might as well just buy this and save time. This album is different from "From Mars to Sirius", "The Link" and "Terra Incognita", but it's still Gojira. It's unique, songs have vastly different feels to them and they give you a sense of deepening atmosphere with each track, but each one has the familiar Gojira sound and insanity.

This album is a lot more heavy than their past albums, and whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to you. For me, it's a good thing, but obviously, too much change is a bad thing. I think they've found a good balance on this album, an extremely heavy album, yet with an incredible uniqueness that only Gojira could accomplish, while not changing so much as to "sell out" or make their past fans disappointed.

Gojira, this album specifically, is for people who love metal, death metal specifically. For people who like their metal VERY heavy, but yet still have melody and uniqueness in a (mostly) bland genre where most other bands couldn't even compare. Each track sounds different, without losing their heavy and dark sound. It has melody and industrial elements, and brings it all together into one incredible package.

If you like any of the descriptions above, then Gojira will be your god.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, innovative, and original metal, October 31, 2008
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
As some other reviewers have indicated, Gojira takes a few listenings in order to be fully comprehended and appreciated. I believe this is a quality of really great music. Even I did not like this album the first time I heard it and I am a huge Gojira fan. I think this initial dislike of Gojira's music is due to preconceptions of music. If it doesn't sound similar to something you liked in the past it may produce an initial aversion. But if you give it some time you will begin to pick up on the qualities that make this band and this album great such as their composition, aggression, and technically awesome musicianship. Another thing that makes this album a must buy is that it is a great whole album. Contemporary music today is filled with artists that release one hit single and fill the rest of the album with garbage. Gojira is like Pink Floyd, one of my other most favorite bands, in many ways such as musical innovation and producing great albums that need to be listened to from beginning to end. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars 100% Original!, October 14, 2008
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
Gojira is a band that is very unlike others in a scene where a lot of extreme bands seem to be just carbon copies of other extreme bands. On this particular outing Gojira are finding their voices and wearing their influences a little less on the proverbial sleeve. Well, I first heard of Gojira in an interview that Randy Blythe gave and he highly recomended these french men, so it is to say the least and to make a long story short, I purchased From Mars to Sirius soon after. At first I really couldn't wrap my head around fMtS and considered it a waste of hard earned cash. I gave the disc a few chances and put it away. Well Gojira didn't stay put for long because one I was pretty bored and wanted to listen to something different and fMtS was there staring at me, daring me to give it another go and this time it was a truly different experience! From that moment on I was a fan, and much like fMts, The Way of all Flesh is 100% original and a breath of fresh air! There is no other band out there just like them, if you haven't heard them yet give Gojira a chance! You won't be disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unquestionably the Best Metal Album of 2008, January 9, 2009
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
Gojira has turned things up a notch. First, the production value is astounding. The drums sound fantastic and the drummer is brilliant in his creativity. The album as a whole just leaves a very satisfying feeling. It's not easy for music this complex and frantic to sound this good.

The Songs. Holy Christ. The creativity and ability of today's metal musicians never cease to amaze me. Just when I think Opeth has taken it as far as it can go -- or Strapping Young Lad, or Lamb of God, or Meshuggah -- Gojira releases this monster. Imagine if Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God, Clutch, Mastodon, Opeth and Fear Factory put all of their creative ideas into one album and I think it may sound a lot like The Way of All Flesh.

Gojira takes a back seat to none of these bands and may have surpassed them all with this album. Fans of heavy music would be wise to pick this one up. It's devastating and unrelenting. It's like a more approachable Meshuggah album, without losing any of the power, creativity and originality that makes a band like Meshuggah so awe-inspiring.

Metal album of the year? Yes. Metal album of this decade so far? Quite possibly.

5.0 out of 5 stars beyond your expectations!!!, March 3, 2009
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
Gojira - The Way of All Flesh

It's is incredibly rare to find new, fresh and original bands these days and Gojira is unique and talented and totally fills out the description.

Directly from France with hate, make no mistakes these guys are here to stay. I personally discovered their music with the album From Mars To Sirius and automatically got hooked. Now with TWOAF they brought the game to another level.

Gojira's music it's just too damn original!! It's a little prog and heavy as hell, melody and depending on the song even sing along choruses.

Here are some highlight songs from TWOAF: Oroborus, A sight to Behold, Vacuity, Toxic Garbage Island. After listening to those you will experience firsthand what's Gojira's all about.

Great album from a promising band indeed, can wait for the next one.

Cheers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Message? Dynamics? Metal?, December 1, 2008
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
Well, there isn't much more I can add to most of the on point comments below other than... If you are a fan of heavy, creative music. Are sick of the played out typical 'breakdowns' common in the current metal genres and can appreciate a little experimentation in your music, THIS is a cd you should own. The production is top notch, the musicianship is excellent, and the lyrics actually have a point.

Whats great around this release, just like their last, is that its ALOT to digest in one sitting. In todays world of terrible music, both metal AND pop, its nice to feel like you are getting your money's worth. MUSIC INDUSTRY TAKE NOTES. Gojira's cd may not be the MUSIC that you need to promote, but it is an example of how to take a played out genre and spin it to give it a breath of fresh air.

This is my first Gojira album and woa!!!....Way, way, way talented! The lyrics are kinda positive thinking, mystical, one with nature kinda stuff that I don't usually like, but despite all of that, the songs are well written, amazingly well produced, and there simply is not doubt about it...Gojira are brilliant musicians. Kinda Tech Metal/progressive death metal, for fans of Opeth, and Meshuggha.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enter One of the Freshest Metal Bands Around, December 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
Gojira's 'The Way of All Flesh' is 12 songs of heavy chugging metal riffage.

Compared to From Mars to Sirius, the musicianship is tight and the record sounds warmer, the drums do sound better. In terms of ingenuity, the album does little things to sound different. It is not as slow and heavy sounding as FMTS but it is probably slightly more creative, a little more clever, and rather than the environmental focus that FMTS had, this record seems very much spiritually influenced.

This is not the Soulfy-esque brand of spirituality, but really touching upon the topics of the soul, kundalini, the astral body and topics found in hinduism and theosophy.

There are some notables here. While most songs are as good as each other, the controversial track is A Sight to Behold, which is more like something you may find on a Cynic album. It sounds very 'French' to me, and I can't seem to really get my head around the annoying electro-vox. But I've read many other opinions from people who say they like it.

The Silver Chord is basically 'filler'. The Lamb of God frontman opens up Adoration for None, however I don't feel it works to benefit the album as the depth of both singers voices are markedly different.

Wolf Down the Earth sounds like it came right from FMTS, and the the title track, the Way of All Flesh is a fast-paced chugger which eventually finishes off at the 6-7 minute mark followed by a fairly pointless seague.

Despite the above critisisms, the other tracks are atypical Gojira. They begin with a massive bang, blowing you off your feet and then take you through their usual gattle-gun type of riffage. They are very solid and well composed tracks which are distinguishable from each other, which was probably a fault Gojira learnt from FMTS and wanted to fix.

For those familiar with their previous work, this album is not so much a 'step in a new direction' as it is a step sideways. How we see Gojira progress here may be in terms of production but not so much creativity - their first two albums were probably more creative.

Who else would like this album if you've never heard of them before? Well anyone who appreciates Meshuggah, Lamb of God, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Morbid Angel. Should it be the first Gojira album to get? I don't think so. I think it is worth getting the back catalogue, in particular The Link, and From Mars to Sirius first.

Great album. While Gojira's soul is very much expressed in The Way of All Flesh lyrically, I feel their Heart is still musically within From Mars to Sirius, and perhaps the former albums. 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!, August 23, 2011
This review is from: The Way of All Flesh (Audio CD)
You know, it's so crazy because i was on youtube looking for the song "die trying" by the art of dying, and accidentally clicked on the art of dying by gojira. i listened to maybe half the song but thought, this guys voice sounds way too heavy for me to enjoy becuase i couldnt really understand what he was saying, and i like some metal. The next day, i had the music entirely stuck in my head and i couldn't get rid of it, so i looked up that song again and tried muscling through the voice. Clicking on more of their stuff, i found i really enjoyed their music and tones and feeling of their music. I finally bought the album and holy crap, this is one of the best albums i have ever listened to. the music is heavy, yes, but you have got to listen to them numerous times. Their lyrics are simply brilliant! Its amazing how deep these lyrics can be while sounding so amazing. I recently bought the other 3 albums now, and i think the way of all flesh is still my favorite, but these guys have got to be my favorite band now! These guys music proves that music can be powerful and meaningful and sound great, front to back. All music artists everywhere, pay attention to greatness!
