Book Description

1980

A profound and deeply personal collection of essays by renowned psychologist Carl Rogers

The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement and father of client-centered therapy, based his life's work on his fundamental belief in the human potential for growth. A Way of Being was written in the early 1980s, near the end of Carl Rogers's career, and serves as a coda to his classic On Becoming a Person. More philosophical than his earlier writings, it traces his professional and personal development and ends with a prophetic call for a more humane future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly impressive account on how best to relate to another, January 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Way of Being (Paperback)
I am most impressed with how Rogers speaks to me through his words. This is not a dry, rational, theoretical book - this book truly is a personal dialogue with the reader, allowing us to gain insight into the thinking and wisdom of one great visionary. How grateful we can be, that we no longer are treated as objects, numbers, problems to be labeled and fixed, when we see a therapist. What a huge shift Rogers has brought about in how to treat another person, not only in therapy, but in daily life! This is an extremely insightful book, not only for all counsellors, but for anyone who prides him/herself as being a good friend and listener. Read this, and you will be swept away.

Like all Rogerian work, this is another masterpiece to add to your collection. Easy, enjoyable, and flows beautifully. A must read for the psychology, social work student. An excellent introductory book for the inspiring Humanistic psychologist. Highly recommend On Becoming A Person, by Rogers. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Way of Being, September 8, 2005

This review is from: A Way of Being (Paperback)
This is a wonderful read for people who are interested in understanding dialogical relationship. It will not only benefit people working in the field of counselling/psychotherapy but will be enlightening to anyone interested in meeting the other with genuine interest and respect. Rogers highlights an attitude towards one's self and to others, not techniques to be pulled out of a hat and in essence decribes a way of being - a lived experience rather than doing something to someone.
