Excellent introduction and handbook to Chinese Medicine!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Way of Chinese Herbs (Paperback)
My husband and I have many books on Chinese Medicine, but always return to this one. It is the best in providing the names for Chinese medicines by ailment -- something most helpful when searching in Chinatown for the medicine. What is especially useful is the names of the Chinese formulas in pill form. Gan mao ling has been a life saver in fighting off colds and flu, and that is only one of the herbs we have found! The Chinese clerks/herbalists have been impressed with our knowledge, asking where we have been able to get the information and names of the right medicine.

This is THE book for learning Chinese herbology,
By
This review is from: The Way of Chinese Herbs (Paperback)
For many years I have held an interest in TCM, especially Chinese herbology. With my desire to study and enter the profession as a Chinese herbologist I was so pleased to have found this book. DR. Tierra gives an excellent, easy to understand explanation of the wonderful healing system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from Yin Yang theory to the eight principles and diagnosis. Many Chinese herbs are here which includes the organ mederians affected, indications, contraindications, energy and flavor, common name as well as the dosage. Many Western herbs are also explained. So, if you have an interest in Chinese herbology, TCM, or interested in natural healing, this book is the place to start.
I don't know if Dr. Tierra reads these reviews but just in case I want to say THANK YOU for this excellent work. It has really helped me as I begin my studies in Chinese herbology!

Being a Herbalist myself I really do love "The Way of Chinese Herbs" along with other books I keep them as references to help me help my clinets overcome challenges. The author has very useful information and his own insites that are very important to me. It is one thing to know the herbs themselves but knowing from personal experience how to use them means a lot more to me and Michael Tierra does a great job!

Brilliantly written, Tierra is a visionary,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Way of Chinese Herbs (Paperback)
My Father, Dr. Michael Tierra is trully inspiring to me. I have watched him over the course of my life wholeheartedly embrace herbalism. I can remember going with him to many different herbal healers all over the country, and listen to him try to get as much information from them as he could, even though sometimes it was hard to understand their english, and they seemed hesitant to teach their ancient knowlege to white people. This sort of thing never seemed to stop him . I've seen him quickly pull off the side of the road and pick a bunch of fresh herbs that seemed to call out to him, and go home and make them into many different healing rememdies for his friends, patients, and family. I've studied with him in his clinic for many years and watched him make individual formulas for his patients, and it reminded me of watching a great musician play his instrument. I am in awe of his genuine love and connection with all of the herbs - Chinese, Ayurvedic, Western, etc. For all of us who have had the honor to be with and study from someone who is trully connected with the herbs, intuitively, mentally, scientifically, clinically, etc. it is a real privilege to have a compilation of his experience in a book so all can reap the rewards.

Excellent summary book for herbs and other natural items used in traditional Chinese medicine. Academic enough to be used in college work, but easy and interesting to read as leisure reading. I recommend this book.

this is the best book on herbs and the way the chinese use them. the author michael tierra was one of the 1st americans to go to china to learn accupunture and how to use herbs to fix people of their alements. i was skeptical at first reading this book. but the
(TCM-- traditional chinese medicine, ( in china people who perform TCM are considered doctors ) that me and my wife are seeing is a god send. he has subdued her extreme pain of fibermyalga with accupunture and herbs. in the west, if they can't fix it with a pill or surgery they want nothing to do with you, YOU JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT they just mask the problem, they don't get to the why it is happening. but in TCM everything can be made right. for TCM goes to why the problem started or what is causing the problem. they get to the ROOT of the problem this book explains TCM and gives a list of all the herbs that is used, ( over 400 ). if you have ANYTHING WRONG WITH YOU AND I MEAN ANYTHING----GET THIS BOOK AND IT WILL OPEN YOUR YOU EYES UP TO TCM.

This review is from: The Way of Chinese Herbs (Paperback)
I have been taking Chinese Herbal Tea mixtures put together by my Acupuncture physician and Herbalist here in central Florida. Feifei Liu Traditional Chinese Mecicine in Winter Park Fl. The gastrointestinal relief I have obtained from these Chinese herbs is amazing. It is great to be able to read about the different herbs and combinations she compiles. I wouldn't however attempt to treat myself, but enjoy this as an addition.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift
for my girlfriend and she loved it. We have been looking at different ways to stay or should i say get healthier and she was intrigued by Chinese medicine. It has a variety of things to try for different ailments and we have given it a shot with the recommendations. We haven't tried everything yet. But what we have tried we like and will hope it leads to a healthier life.

Unimpressive,
By
This review is from: The Way of Chinese Herbs (Paperback)
I was not happy with this purchase. The book is haphazardly organized and little more than wild and unsubstantiated claims. I don't put much stock in TCM but I do recognize that some herbs do have beneficial effects and I find this very interesting to read about. In this book, however, it is impossible to distinguish the absolute nonsense from the *possibly* true. I note for instance, that under the heading 'Cholesterol (Lowering) the author recommends Cattail Pollen. In the section headed 'Cattail Pollen', however, there is a list of several conditions for which the herb is beneficial but high cholesterol is not one of them. This doesn't say much for the value of this book in my mind.
