This is the fourth Elmer Kelton book I have read this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you are looking for an authentic western with believable plot and story line ... you can't go wrong with Elmer Kelton.

Staged in the reconstruction years of early Texas, it weaves a wonderful story of strong characters and even stronger family ties. Mr. Kelton is an...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Kelton's best...
This is the fifth Kelton book I have read. He is a fine writer, maybe the best of our western writers. This is a good entertaining western. The characters are well drawn, but it is just average for Kelton. The story just kind of wanders around. The plot is reminiscent of "The Searchers." I'd read "The Good Old Boys" first.

I must have misunderstood the description of this particular book. It is not at all what I expected or intended to purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Western Fan, January 1, 2011

I just started reading Westerns after thinking, for most of my life, that as a woman they just wouldn't interest me (sexist, I know). Wow, was I wrong. I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. All of the characters were interesting and the plot intricate and fast moving. I really didn't want it to end. I can't wait to read another Elmer Kelton!
