4.0 out of 5 stars Truth and Beauty for the descerning eye, October 20, 2002

This review is from: Way of Everyday Life: Zen Master Dogen's Genjokoan (Hardcover)
The most prfound of Zen Essays by the Great Master Dogen, with commentary by no one more capable than his lineage holder,Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi. The photographs, taken by Minor White student, and successor to Maezumi Roshi, John Daido Loori Roshi, are award winning photographs by a master with an eye to see and capture the truth and beauty we so often overlook in haste and impatience. A rare combination of visual and written insight to provoke glimpses of the profound truth of human exixtence.

2.0 out of 5 stars An Ugly Zen Book, December 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Way of Everyday Life: Zen Master Dogen's Genjokoan (Hardcover)
This book consists of the beautiful and profound Genjokoan essay by Dogen Zenji, which takes up about ten pages in nice calligraphy. Then there is a vapid commentary on it by Rev. Maezumi, who is not up to the task. This is accompanied by pages and pages of amateurish, muddy, and thoroughly dated photographs (from the 70's) of puddles, pieces of grass, cement walls, various broken stuff, etc. Be grateful this book is out of print.
