Book Description

If you like Lee Child's non-stop action and Harlan Coben's stomach twisting suspense, you'll love No Way Out, the third book in the Jack Davis Thriller series by Joel Goldman!

"Sleek and sassy, No Way Out is a page-turner that keeps going full speed until the very end."
Faye Kellerman, New York Times Bestselling author

"Goldman spins his latest yarn into a clever, complex tangle of chain reactions between six families of characters whose lives are intertwined by blood, greed, lust, desperation and even love."
435 South Magazine

Meeting ex-FBI agent Jack Davis in the middle of a shootout is the best thing that could have happened to Roni Chase. As Jack follows Roni into a lethal web of deceit, years in the making, the only thing that can save them - time - is running out.

Think James Patterson meets Michael Connelly and you've got Joel Goldman in No Way Out!

"This is the third book in the Jack Davis series. I loved it! It's fast paced and provides an edge-of-your-seat intensity that doesn't let up. It starts off with a bang and goes right to the end with hardly a break."
Daisy's Book Journal

"No Way Out has a most compelling main character. He's driven by his own demons and past mistakes. He has what would seem to be an insurmountable flaw. When he develops the shakes and crashes to one knee, he pulls himself up and you, the reader, with him."
Helen Ginger

Jump on Now Way Out and hang on for a rockin' ride!

Then grab Shakedown, the first book in the Jack Davis Thriller series. When FBI Agent Jack Davis investigates a mass murder, a leak of crucial information and his imploding personal life throw him into the ultimate danger zone - where truth lies at the heart of betrayal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Characters February 21, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
No Way Out by Joel Goldman is a cross between a thriller and a crime novel. It's the third in the series starring ex-FBI agent Jack Davis.

Like all protagonists, Jack Davis has his flaw or Achilles Heel. Unlike a lot of lead characters, though, his is a doozie. With the FBI for 25 years, he didn't retire or quit under a cloud. He quit because he developed what he calls "the shakes." Often without warning and often when things get "hairy," he begins to shake. He can't control it and it often drops him to his knees. That doesn't stop him, though. It does, however, put him in some precarious situations.

This case involves gun dealers being robbed and, in the latest incident, killed. He ends up investigating it. Jack has more than just his shakes to deal with. His ex-wife lives with him while she deals with terminal cancer. The woman who often drives him is his past lover. When he doesn't have someone to drive him, he rides the city bus. And when someone else might give up, he keeps going.

By the end, he solves the case. What he loses, though, is both painful and life-changing. And the chances are you won't see the killer coming.

No Way Out has a most compelling main character. He's driven by his own demons and past mistakes. He has what would seem to be an insurmountable flaw. When he develops the shakes and crashes to one knee, he pulls himself up, and you the reader, with him. His dying wife does not have a huge role in the book, but she is never far from your mind. Eldon, the gun dealer who is killed coming home from a gun show, stays in your head. It is the characters who inhabit Jack Davis' world that stick in your memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book! September 20, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just started reading Mr. goldman's books and I really like them. I like his characters and the stories are great. I like to read a book that I just can't " put down" and this was one of those. Not super thrilling or non-stop action, just a good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Way Out is About the Underbelly of Kansas City October 5, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was this reviewer's first experience with a Joel Goldman mystery thriller, but it most assuredly won't be the last. No Way Out is set in Kansas City, mostly Northeast Kansas City and his descriptions made you feel like you were actually in that section of the country, even if you've never set foot in Kansas City.
The thriller begins at a typical gun show and provides the reader who may never have attended such an event, a good overview of the experience. One of the gun dealers is robbed of his entire inventory after a bazaar chase and encounter with an 8-point buck.
The book's main character is an ex-FBI agent named Jack Davis. He's not the typical hero type in that he has a partial disability (he sometimes gets temporary shakes and spasms--not fatal, but also not curable), but that doesn't keep him from working part-time with a private detective agency. In fact, the characters working in that agency are probably pretty typical of the private eye business, as it exists today. The boss is Simon Alexander a computer whiz who does most of his crime solving on line. His field investigator and girlfriend is Lucy Trent, an ex-cop and ex-con and she does most of the footwork. Jack Davis comes in to assist in certain cases where his years of FBI experience may be helpful or when somebody who can legally carry a gun is needed. In this novel they are also working with a lawyer for one of their clients and Kate Scranton his expert at telling if a witness is lying or telling the truth. "Kate was a psychologist and jury consultant who could read lies in the involuntary facial movements none of us suppress."
The ATF is represented along with two regular detectives from different police departments. Several of the cases that Jack is working on turn out to be related.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bridget's Review September 12, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
No Way Out is a fun, action-packed book that was full of suspense. It reminded me of some of my favorite action flicks and I could definitely see this one on the big screen. When you're looking for adventure, pick up Joel's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! March 30, 2012
By Mommit
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you like murder mysteries Joel Goldman is a great author. There is suspense from the first page to the very last. Better than CJ Lyons, John Grisham, and Mike Connely! His books are longer than most and I save money. The other authors our out-pricing themselves. Give him a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ November 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a recent convert to this series, I looked forward to reading this book.

The storyline was interesting - the undercurrent of personal redemption as the prime motivator for his actions is again a strong theme in the book. The plot: the kidnapping of children and how it was intermixed with arms smuggling was very interesting and very well done. What the author does very well is make you think through the different threads of the clues to solve the mystery - you do get to be the detective.

Unfortunately, I found the end was a bit disappointing. It was as if the author ran out of inspiration and decided to take the easy way and quickly tie up a whole lot of loose ends in a couple of pages.

Look forward to the movie version!

More About the Author

Joel Goldman writes crime thrillers to die for. He's the Edgar and Shamus nominated author of three riveting thriller series.

Trial lawyer Lou Mason is a powerful, sexy man, more than six feet of hard muscle and once a keen rugby player. He's loyal and principled, both to a fault. His wry, sarcastic sense of humor and knack for top class banter are disarming, sometimes obscuring a recklessly brave spirit. Passionate about justice, he dives into the dark water, taking on cases others lawyers would run away from.

In Jack Davis' world only liars, drunks and guilty people shake uncontrollably. Then he joins their ranks. After 25 years as an FBI Special Agent, Jack is forced to retire because a mysterious movement disorder that makes him shake, sometimes bending him in half, sometimes strangling his speech. The cause and cure are unknown and Jack's condition colors his entire life. So much so that it ends his FBI career. In his new guise of part time private detective, he can't predict when the shakes will start... he just knows they will. Most of the time he just hopes he isn't holding a gun when it happens because crooks and killers don't give anyone a break.

Alex Stone is a Public Defender, devoted to representing people charged with a crime who can't afford a lawyer. More often than not, her clients and cases are lost causes. But the dismal odds only encourage her. Long, lean, and ropy from years of early-morning workouts, she knows only one way to live and one way to try a case: bear down and go all out.
She's determined to give her indigent clients the same measure of justice the rich and well bred receive. That's what everyone, guilty or innocent, highborn or low, deserves, and that's why she became a public defender. That higher calling matters more than whether her clients are guilty or innocent. But when the system fails to deliver justice, she makes certain justice is done.

If you like heroes you can care about, believe in and root for, you'll love Lou Mason, Jack Davis and Alex Stone. If you like crime thrillers with riveting suspense, jaw dropping twists and page-turning action, you'll love Joel Goldman's novels.
