Willing to be had,

This review is from: Way of a Man With a Maid (Wordsworth Classic Erotica S) (Paperback)
Beware girls, when this guy is around. Refuse his love and see what he will do. He commits an unnnatural act by force and she enjoys it so much, that she asks for it and not the other, second time around. Throughly enjoyed this book, as the heroine becomes so depraved that she helps her ravisher to seduce other acquaitances whom she too enjoys. Only downer was that no other men occur.

Oh, those Victorians...,

Ignore the offended fussings of the previous reviewer. Yes, this novel eroticizes rape. But keep the context in mind: Victorian England, where/when "proper ladies" would never admit to liking sex, let alone seek it out. If you're looking for something to affirm your womynhood, there are plenty of other erotic reads out there nowadays.
Subtle, the book is not. Then again, some of us like the heavy-breathing, over-the-top, exclamation-mark-laden descriptions that characterize much Victorian erotica. And some of us don't particularly care that much if the plot isn't comparable to that of something on the New York Times best-seller list. Granted, I'd have liked to see the other female characters developed as much as Alice's is. Just take the book as a sequence of vignettes, not a fully integrated novel. I do have two issues with this book. One is that the author seems to be a little unfamiliar with the workings of female anatomy (which might have been more common then among men than it is today): the women do not seem to lubricate until orgasm, when they "gush" in a manner similar to ejaculation. The other is that the final vignette, involving a mother and daughter who are forced into sexual acts with one another, is way beyond my limits and probably many other people's limits as well.

BSDM-oriented Erotica,

This review is from: The Way of a Man with a Maid (Hardcover)
Bondage and submission. Male dominance. Victorian erotica. These are some of the key themes I would choose for this book. Of course the book is taboo. Anyone buying EROTICA should realize that. The book deals with a man who outfits his home with a sort of dungeon in which he lures women, straps them down, and has sex with them. After wards, several of the women come back to him willingly and even help him with his next "victim". If this sort of work offends you, then I suggest you look for something else. For the sort of book this was supposed to be, it was amazing.

Let's face it we all have wicked imaginations when it comes to sex.
So enjoy this tale with the knowledge that no maidens were harmed. Hail Britainia.

Good read!,
This review is from: The Way of a Man with a Maid (Kindle Edition)
I wanted to research some historical erotica and this was an interesting read. My only gripe is that no one knows the original author and I hate it when I can't get some follow through. Just slightly above average and wish I could give it more.

A Waste of Time, Money, Ink and Paper!!!,

A Waste of Time and Money!
If you're considering buying this book, I implore you to avoid wasting your time and money and choose a book by Lisa Kleypas instead. Her books are wonderful historical erotic romances! Unlike this book (and I use the term "book" rather loosely), her books actually have a plot! This sorry excuse for a book sorely lacked one! This manuscript simply can not compare to one that is even slightly developed! This is, I repeat, a waste of time, paper, and ink! I was tempted several times to throw it across the room, especially when I realized the rape and sodomy that the antagonist, Jack, had in store for the protagonist, Alice. I kept reading in an effort to find something that would redeem this awful waste of paper, but to no avail! Alice, however, does not long remain the protagonist, for she quickly becomes just as depraved as the antagonist, leading unwary females into debauchery with her and Jack by aiding him in constraining, abusing, and raping their victims. After the first few pages, this story degenerates into an account of sexual abuse, rape, and abduction. Here, the plot, if there was one, is lost among the retelling of Jack's sexual exploits. There is no real central conflict that must be resolved by the story's end and no real suspense (except, maybe, my wondering when the authorities would apprehend and punish these sodomites/rapists/kidnappers). There is clearly no real story or problem to resolve here! This book reads almost like a personal diary, but it goes nowhere and does nothing to illicit any response from the reader other than arousal - and it does not successfully accomplish even that! It is no wonder that the author wouldn't assign his identity to such a piece of nothingness! The story just ends with the cessation of another of their sexual exploits! That incensed me! My hard earned money was wasted on such a paltry literary offering and I am very sorry for it! This isn't even a full story! It's more of a short story or journalistic and sadistic account of the erotic musings and doings of a few deranged and depraved sociopaths! I kept asking myself, "Why doesn't someone simply report Jack to the police?" Having Jack arrested for rape and sodomy would have been a simple task. Why didn't any of the violated females (Alice, Fanny, or Connie) avail themselves of that simple solution? Then I figured out why! If they did what any logical person would, in fact do, there would then be no story! As there is so little of it to begin with, I strongly advise you to forgo this particular waste of time, ink, and paper! If you desire Victorian/Regency/Historical sensual romance, devote yourself to Lisa Kleypas' sensual, titillating tales (Then Came You, Dreaming of You or Lady Sophia's Lover), because THE WAY OF A MAN WITH A MAID is senseless, plotless, and tasteless! |
