Pre-Thievery Corporation goodness,
By C. G. "seagrass" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Way Out There (Audio CD)
Before Thievery Corporation, even before Washington D.C.'s 18th St. Lounge, there existed the Exodus Quartet. Don't expect the same dubbed-out T.C. exotica here; Exodus has a style all its own. You CAN hear some of what would eventually evolve into the Thievery Corporation sound (similar samples and Latin rhythms), but for the most part it is easy to differentiate between the two groups. "Way Out There" is similar in sound to the James Taylor Quartet, with more of an emphasis on Latin and bossa grooves than 70's-style funk. Great stuff for Thievery Corp. completists; however, Exodus Quartet's style transcends even its founders' now-legendary credentials.

This CD is incredable. I was very impressed with the smooth sounds of Exodus Quartet. The sound RED is breath taking. It really get's the mood going if there is to be one. Of all of he groups out there, Exodus Quartet can swing with the best of them. They have a Flavor that will carry on for years to come.

This is an unbelievable album. Great grooves from beginning to end. The keyboards and the sax are jumping. You can not sit still listening to this release. "Groove Gumbo" is a party favorite. Do they have more albums? If so let me know!

Good acid jazz.,

This cd is very good overall. Most of the tracks are great for setting the chillin, kick back mood. A few, such as "What's That" and "Our Man in Havana" have made it on to my favorite compilations and for this alone it has been worth the money.

Cool Angles In Acid Jazz,
By Vasilius Trokis (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews

Exodus Quartet has released such a cool and diverse CD, I wonder when their next album will be unleashed. I picked up this CD in 1997 and haven't heard from them since. Regardless, "Way Out There" is a very appropo title for this album. This stylish blend of an album features several genres infused within the cool acid jazz sounds. The result is a timelessly fresh and (predominantly) instrumentally soulful body of work that captivates and impresses. Obviously inspired from funkier times encompassing the 1970s, funky tracks like "18th Street," "What's That," "Perfect Vibe" bring fourth a new spin with energetic saxophones, upbeat keyboard sounds, "singing" vibraphones, and slammin' beats. Ranged with this fun fusion, Exodus Quartet has also incorporated and executed some beautiful Latin-inspired tunes. Most notable is the warmly smooth "Los Gatos" with its breezy flute, loungey background keys, and very Latin rhythmic beat. The mambo-esque "Our Man in Havana" offers the fine combination of vibraphone impeccably juxtaposing to an ascending piano that continues the rhythm in perfect stride. One bossa nova classic, "Corcovado," is given its fine interpretive treatment here with a soothing female vocal carried with soft percussion and keyboard playing. Some of the more original and softer compositions here, "Red" and "Summer Solstice" are arranged and performed so perfectly, it very well exemplifies the overall acid jazz spectrum in rhythm, beat, and sound -- and how this genre of music should be emulated. Ranging in a wonderful scope of differing musical genres fitting for this debut effort, Exodus Quartet has delivered an excellent piece of work! After three years, the beautiful sounds herein is a treasure for a cool musical excursion. I'm still waiting for their sophomore endeavor . . . . |
