Book Description

March 31, 2003
This work is chiefly made up of extracts from letters, hence the living, personal note that sounds through its pages. The lessons taught herein will help one find his way of peace and blessedness. This must be the way of consecrated service to a lofty ideal, through unwavering trust, purity of heart and steadfast devotion. To follow it, one must rouse the soul from its slumber of ignorance or indifference and make it feel the reality of God and the spiritual life.

4.0 out of 5 stars High Thoughts in Everyday Language, November 8, 2011
By
meow tomcat (British Columbia, Canada) - See all my reviews
Originally published in 1913, much of the book is taken from the letters of Swami Paramananda (1884- 1940) edited by Sister Devamata (1867- 1942). The personal and caring quality of letters is carried into the book. In the Vedanta (Hindu) approach, Sister Devamata explains, religion is always an individual problem and therefore the spiritual seeker requires a teacher.

The chapter headings mark the way, worshipping Truth, developing a spiritual life, trust in the divine, serving the ideal and having a pure heart. Although there are some references to the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, most of the time the advice is universal. And these high thoughts and advice are expressed simply as one might in conversation without reference to Sanskrit terms such as karma and atman. Swami Paramananda came to American in 1906 and later established the Vedanta Centre of Boston.
