From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10 - An introductory chapter relating Afghanistan's history and geographical setting is followed by others that portray the rise of the Taliban, life under the Sharia (the rigid form of Islamic law they adopted), the intolerable position assigned to women, the widespread poverty, the country's role as a terrorist training ground, and the resistance that developed against the regime. The work concludes with the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Quotes from residents, journalists, aid workers, and U.N. officials enliven the clearly presented, accurate material (the only notable error being the misspelling of the Buddhist site Bamiyan), related in chilling detail. The numerous black-and-white photographs, while informative, are occasionally fuzzy. An excellent resource for reports.

Review
"Information is presented clearly, with a nice selection of interesting detail to illustrate points and a generous sprinkling of footnotes. Numerous black-and-white illustrations include period engravings, documents, paintings, and photographs of artifacts. Photographs showing modern reenactments are clearly labeled. This resource is a solid addition to the existing body of literature."
