Great Energy.,
By Collin L (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: By the Way (Audio CD)
By The Way (The first single off of their ground-breaking album By The Way) is a fast paced, no-nonsense number that goes through harsh, abrasive times, and calm, sedate moods. The verses are rapped in Kiedis' old, BSSM type of style. When thrusting itself through the chorus, however, one can hear a divulging of harmonic masterpieces of simplicity and excellence. Being a generally "rougher" track, By The Way is somewhat out of place on the album, apart from a few other songs that keep true to their roots in funk and rap.
This single (version two) is paired with two energy-bursting songs: "Search and Destroy" and "What is Soul". "Search and Destroy" is a prevailing Iggy Pop cover that explodes with vigor and awe. Always one to be potent in their live performances, The Chili Peppers never fail to provide excellent, music-high tracks of delirium. "What is Soul" has clean, crisp guitar solos and amazing improvisation by Anthony Kiedis. It sounds funky, and churned in groovy pockets of elation. Not a second of this is done in vain. Precision from start to finish, on all three songs I might add. Highly Recommended.

Great live b-sides.,

This review is from: By the Way (Audio CD)
Another one of those two-part singles, this particular single (title track and leadoff single from the album "By the Way") contains the title track backed by two non-album b-sides, both live covers-- the Stooges' "Search and Destroy" and Funkadelic's "What Is Soul?".
Interested parties are advised to be careful-- there are two formations of the two parts of these singles-- if you're looking for all four b-sides, make sure you get a matching set. So things have changed with the Peppers, and in many ways, "By the Way" is sort of a culmination of the band's career-- a chorus of clean tone guitars washed in vocal harmonies and a funky, slap-bass driven distorted verse mingle to put together just a fantastic song. The b-sides are great- on "Search and Destroy" the Peppers bristle with a live energy and explosiveness, doing a relatively straight punk reading of the piece before opening up into a spectacular extended jam. "What Is Soul?" lets the Chili Peppers sink way deep into the groove of the piece and Anthony Kiedis makes up his own verse true to the original before opening into a frantic jam. In the end, these live takes will likely please old fans of the Chili Peppers, and the performance is great. Recommended.

Great Studio B-sides,
By "freshmankelly" (Marietta, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: By the Way (Audio CD)
This single has 2 studio tracks on it that are really good. The first one, "Time" is a good funky song but the standout is their cover of the old fifties song "Teenager in Love". Further exploring their love of doo-wop that is all over the new album By the Way, "Teenager in Love" is a great gem and one of the best cover songs that the Peppers have done. It's up there with "Search and Destroy", "Higher Ground", and "Subterraean Homesick Blues". Loaded with John's back up harmonies the song swings with acoustic swagger, you can almost see the smiles on their faces as they play it. I'd buy this one for that song alone.
