Exceptional mix of tunes in different moods,
By A Customer
This review is from: Way That I Am (Audio CD)
This album is really one of the great ones! It doesn't matter which mood you're in - it'll always leave you happy, with the knowledge that life always has something more to give you. Martina makes it sound as if she means EVERY word that she sings - total joy or total misery. If she can come even close to the quality of this album on her future releases - don't hesitate, get them!!

No Sophomore Slump Here,

Though Martina McBride's debut was a solid enough collection of country pop, it failed to get her noticed on country radio, with the exception being the limited success of the album's title track. That wasn't a problem with this album, which just happened to better her debut and establish her as one of the best female vocalists of any genre to come down the pike in the last decade. First single 'My Baby Loves Me', though somewhat lightweight, was just one of many styles McBride gravitated towards, though she did and continues to do so masterfully. There were several other uptempo gems here, specifically 'Goin To Work' and 'Life #9', and her anthem 'Independence Day' remains a watershed for her, and marked her as one of the few country artists(the only other female that springs to mind is Reba) not afraid to tackle weighty social matters, a platform she continues to uphold to this day. Though that song established her, it's her command of the album's ballads that really show what McBride was capable of both artistically and vocally--'Where I Used To Have A Heart', 'That Wasn't Me',and 'She Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' are as good as anything she's ever done and were the true overlooked highlights of the album. A sterling example of how well an artist can marriage radio expectations with artistic credibility.

"Independence Day" made Martina a Super-Star, but after listening to this album many times, my favorite is "That Wasn't Me", a true masterpiece.

Pre-crossover Martina, one of her better efforts,

Martina McBride's second album, "The Way That I Am,' is a well balanced collection of predominantly country songs that includes a few up-tempo rockers as well as some ballads. It has much more of a classic country sound than some of her later releases. I'm surprised by the relatively low number of reviews on this CD--which I hope doesn't mean that a lot less people are familiar with it. "Independence Day" clearly was the breakthrough single from this disc, but all of the songs are good. "The Way That I Am" is a Martina McBride CD that definitely is worth checking out, especially if you only are familiar with her later releases, which do not have as much of a classic country sound as this one.

The Way That I Am,

This is an album that I can actually play on the fourth of July. The reason why is because of the song 'Independence Day' by Martina McBride. The song 'Life #9' is very upbeat as far as how the rhythm of that song is concerned. The above songs should be on her 'Greatest hits' cd sometime soon.

I think this is a great album of Martina McBride! All the songs on here are great! Some of the good ones are, "Heart Trouble", "Where I Use To Have a Heart", "Life #9", and "My Baby loves Me". She has such a powerful voice that makes a song come to life! She sings like she's living each song she sings. Martina has the best voice out there and this album proves it!! So if you like great music with a awesome voice with it, this album will give you that!!!!

The Album That Started It All For Martina...,

Still one of my favorite Martina albums. This is classic Martina!
Although this isn't her first album(it's her second) she only started producing hits since this second album, after releasing her famous domestic abuse hit Independence Day, which after 16 years is still her signature song and what a powerful song it is too!!Also other stand outs are the touching ballads That Wasn't Me,her hit Where I Used To Have A Heart(love this song),She Ain't Seen Nothing Yet and Strangers(her vocals are amazing on this). However, there's also some cracking uptempo toe - tapping gems like her hits Life #9,Heart Trouble and My Baby Loves Me. You can never go wrong with a Martina McBride album. You will not be disappointed with this little gem!!

I have no musical training and little musical knowledge. I just know
I like to listen to Martina McBride. I was listening to a radio show and the host was playing Martina singing "God Bless America." I wrote and asked him to always let Martina sing that particular song. Now he only plays the Martina version. I find her music restful, and there's a sincerity and down home feeling about it, and her voice is lovely. Tonight I was listening to her "White Christmas" CD. |
