5.0 out of 5 stars book is worth thousands of dollars, saves years of time, November 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Way Up from Down (Paperback)
This book emphasizes the amino acid, nutritional solution to depression, and it is excellent. The book is well written, Dr. Slagle is a practicing psychiatrist with backgrounds at UCLA and USC. My depression symptoms were so severe, and lasting for over 15 years, that I went on medical disability after being fired from 3 good paying professional jobs. After reading this book, and also Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution (also excellent) I was able to see relief from the terrible depressions in just days, and after 50 days all my major symptoms had vanished. No most costly SSRI meds, doctor visits, adverse side effects, lost years....and besides, the SSRI and tricyclic medications didn't work anyway. This book gives a fast, low cost (amino acids, vitamins, food supplements) solution that had permanent medical results for me. An excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life, June 5, 2004
By
DJ Primate (Detroit, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Way Up from Down (Paperback)
Some time ago, I was living in a hellish state that was like some kind of bad drug trip: blurry consciousness, constant depression and lethargy, memory loss, attention deficit, and frequent suicidal thoughts that were nearly carried out on several occasions.

One day I was wandering in a haze after work, went inside a book store, and sought out books on depression. I read the premise of this book, and thought "what the hell, worth a shot."

After about 10 days of diet and nutritional modification to boost the mood-elevating brain chemicals as recommended in the book, I became a different person, and noticed a greatly increased energy level, and even reversal of hair loss! There were still some serious biochemical imbalances (such as chronic "yeast" and bacterial infections, food allergies, and chemical sensitivities) that affected my mental health, and remained undiscovered, but the nutritional information in this book set me on the right path. The sun began to shine again, and despite the remaining untreated conditions, there were enough "ups" to make life worth living again, and give me hope for the medication-free recovery that eventually did come about when I eventually became aware of and treated those other issues.

This book saved my life, and finally explained why some people can keep a smile through the worst misfortunes while others can be miserable while living the life of royalty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instant Hope, August 16, 2000
This review is from: The Way Up from Down (Paperback)
Everyone with depression should have this book, especially if it's your first book on how you can treat your depression with nutritional supplements, yes, even suicidal depression. Dr. Slagle's simple and easy-to-understand explanations give you the "instant hope" you so badly need. Her knowledge and experience in treating the physical causes of depression will give you the confidence to begin helping yourself out of the lost world of depression. I sincerely hope Dr. Slagle (TheWayUp.com) will re-print this book even just as it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been there, still doing that., April 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Way Up from Down (Paperback)
I'm one who is helped by this program. I go off the program, get depressed (I cry alot - feel sad), back on, feel fine, feeling weepy goes away. Brain chemistry seems to be be just a little off. Cost is minimal. Vendor suggested I read this back in 94. Been taking L-tryosine since. 2 gr/d. 4 gr. when business is bad. I have a high anxiety wife, she is much more mellow when she takes it regularly. She has noticed the difference.

May not work for everyone as everyones chemistry is different but it is certainly worth a try, just make sure you keep at it for 2 or 3 months as it is not an instant fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear info. for restoring normal mood, September 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Way Up from Down (Paperback)
The Way Up From Down Practical info., clearly explained by a Calif. psychiatrist whose depression didn't resolve taking the usual antidepressants or using therapy - but did recover using orthomolecular medicine - well referenced, clear, helpful. If you are depressed, it could help you restore normal mood without adverse effect. The method worked well for me - suggest checking with your doctor - don't count on him / her knowing about the restorative possibilities involved with orthomolecular medicine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Natural treatment concepts for sufferers of depression, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Way Up from Down (Paperback)
Finally! Depression explained in a manner which makes sense to those of us who have not yet earned a doctorate degree. A great source of references for the management of depression for those who prefer natural remedies v. synthetic medications. Anyone coping with depression/anxiety will appreciate the thorough explanation of causes and alternative treatment options for this illness. As a sufferer of depression and anxiety myself, I found the detailed explanations satisfyingly scientific yet not too overwhelming for the lay person. A friend lent me the first copy of this book: I intend to buy at least 4 more copies for my relatives and friends also coping with the symptoms of depression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, February 28, 2011
This review is from: Way Up From Down (Hardcover)
I do not know a lot about taking vitamins for emotional health. But, the book was written by someone with a lot of experience. It spells out, at least in some depth, what to take (though each case is different, she gives the basic general approach, while listing different variables). The book helped me feel more comfortable trying to take supplements and what-not for my emotional health, and was encouraging for me. There is a long bibliography in the back. Comprehensive, a good place to start finding out about the vitamin/supplement approach to emotional health.
