Book Description

2007

What a thrilling little treasure this is, a completely rediscovered book by Henry Hazlitt from 1922

This is Hazlitt before he became an advocate of the Austrian School, and here he is not writing on economics but personal ethics as informed by ancient principles. But the pre-Austrian in him shines through, because it is an application of the theory of time preference he picked up from his reading.

The book has been nearly impossible to get until this new edition, completely reset by the Mises Institute.

Why bring it back? Because it is Hazlitt, and because it is just splendid as a manual for the management of personal life Just look at some of these quotes:

"Will-Power, then, may be defined as the ability to keep a remote desire so vividly in mind that immediate desires which interfere with it are not gratified."

"As long as we keep in the backgrounds of our minds that the will is really an abstraction, there is no harm in speaking of it a good part of the time as if it were an entity; and insofar as it can be said to represent a definite and permanent entity, the will may be defined as our desire to be a certain kind of character. "

"It is not the 'conscience' in itself, nor the 'evil' desires, that ultimately count; it is the relation of the one to the other. The stronger his conscience, or counter-desires, must be; the weaker his desires, the less need he has for a strong conscience."

"A man who is good from docility, and not from stern self-control, has no character."

5.0 out of 5 stars Pursue and Reach your Goals, May 7, 2011
This review is from: The Way to Will Power (Paperback)
"The Way to Will Power" is a philosophical study of understanding what willpower is and isn't. If you follow the advice you will become versed in training and controlling yourself for self-improvement.

You will learn skills to control your thoughts, improve your concentration and build inner strength. Discover a means of forming good habits and of breaking bad ones. Learning to use your will power to your benefit is really learning a success principle. You can train yourself to devote your mind to the solution of problems. Gain endurance. Just as muscles can be built, willpower can be built too. The strength of your character is measured by the strength of your will.

Willpower will help you to visualise your dreams and not allow your mind to be distracted. If you buy into mind power/visualisation/laws of attraction, then Willpower is a necessary piece of the puzzle to reach success.

"The Way to Willpower" by Henry Hazlitt is laid out in a simple to understand way, however simple does not equal easy. There is a price to pay. The language is somewhat antiquated (written 1922).

Do you keep breaking your promises to change, whether it is: meaning to wake up earlier, not to hit the snooze button, to eat healthier, spend more time with your kids, study, get organised, etc.?

Everything you do is habit. The time you wake-up, the way you get dressed, the type of company you keep, your leisurely activities, the restaurants you frequent. Your habits, impulses and actions both good and bad shape what you do and who you are. The study and application of this book can transform you. If you seriously want to change your daily habits, change your character and become a focused individual and reach your goals in life; develop Will Power.
