Amazon.com Review

The best thing about Carlene Thompson's excellent psychological thriller isn't the carefully restrained writing or the credible characters. It's the way she can take one of the exhausted cliches of the genre--"Did I Marry a Serial Killer?"--and make it dance. When Deborah Robinson's handsome, overworked lawyer husband Steve suddenly disappears, she begins to wonder about his recent odd behavior and his possible involvement in a series of brutal attacks on local women. Deborah starts to dig, and she soon turns up enough scary stuff about Steve to keep you guessing and feverishly turning pages until the surprising conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better sleep with the lights on!, May 29, 2001
This review is from: The Way You Look Tonight (Mass Market Paperback)
I've been hooked on Carlene Thompson ever since I read In the Event of my Death. Ms. Thompson has a knack for writing the perfect suspense/mystery books without a lot of voilence in them.

Deborah Robinson seems to have the perfect life, a wonderful husband, Steve and adorable twins, it's Christmas time, what could be better? Until her husband disappears one day, after he's been acting strange all week. At the same time a serial killer is brutally killing women, it couldn't be Steve, could it? Deborah's seeks help from her friends and soon discovers strange things begin to happen to her. Someone is watching her family's house, calling in the middle of the night, breaking and entering, Deborah knows she must find out the truth about her husband before it's too late.

I loved this book because everyone looks guilty and you'll never figure out who the real killer is. The ending is so suspenseful, I got goose bumps while reading it. Ms. Thompson has crafted a wonderful story full of twists and turns and surprises. I highly recommend this book, but don't read it just before bed time. You'll be too scared to sleep!

5.0 out of 5 stars A GRIPPING AND HIGHLY ABSORBING THRILLER..., January 29, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Way You Look Tonight (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a terrific novel of suspense, offering the reader a riveting, page turning read. It is hard to put down, once the reader is in its thrall. Well written in spare, clean prose, it will keep most readers guessing until the very end.

The premise is fairly simple. Deborah Robinson, a young woman and mother of an adorable and precocious set of five year old twins, suddenly has the bottom drop out of her world when her husband, Steve, a prosecuting attorney, suddenly disappears without warning. Shortly thereafter, she is stunned to discover that he is suspected of being a serial killer who, for the past eight years, has been killing young women fitting a description that matches hers.

Delving into her husband's past, she uncovers information of which she was previously unaware, which causes her to question just what her husband may really have been hiding. Yet, despite all that she discovers, she believes steadfastedly that her husband is not what he is suspected of being.

At the same time that this is going on, the man who had fifteen years earlier been convicted of brutally beating and raping Steve's sister, Emily, causing her to be institutionalized, is released from prison and believed to be in the area seeking revenge. Does this also have something to do with Steve's disappearance?

Things are not always what they seem, as the reader will discover. There are enough plausible twists and turns in this novel of suspense to satisfy even the most exacting and demanding of readers. This is a gripping read from beginning to end and one of the best of its genre.
