5.0 out of 5 stars Better sleep with the lights on!
I've been hooked on Carlene Thompson ever since I read In the Event of my Death. Ms. Thompson has a knack for writing the perfect suspense/mystery books without a lot of voilence in them.

Deborah Robinson seems to have the perfect life, a wonderful husband, Steve and adorable twins, it's Christmas time, what could be better? Until her husband disappears one day,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't thrill me.
I didn't enjoy this novel at all. I'm a quick reader, and it took weeks for me to get through this one because I just wasn't drawn in. The characters are overdramaticized, weak and irritating, and the story drags on. Deborah is not an exciting protagonist by any means - I found myself getting annoyed with her almost immediately. She tries to come off as a strong woman,...

Until her husband disappears one day, after he's been acting strange all week. At the same time a serial killer is brutally killing women, it couldn't be Steve, could it? Deborah's seeks help from her friends and soon discovers strange things begin to happen to her. Someone is watching her family's house, calling in the middle of the night, breaking and entering, Deborah knows she must find out the truth about her husband before it's too late.

I loved this book because everyone looks guilty and you'll never figure out who the real killer is. The ending is so suspenseful, I got goose bumps while reading it. Ms. Thompson has crafted a wonderful story full of twists and turns and surprises. I highly recommend this book, but don't read it just before bed time. You'll be too scared to sleep!

5.0 out of 5 stars A GRIPPING AND HIGHLY ABSORBING THRILLER..., January 29, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a terrific novel of suspense, offering the reader a riveting, page turning read. It is hard to put down, once the reader is in its thrall. Well written in spare, clean prose, it will keep most readers guessing until the very end.

The premise is fairly simple. Deborah Robinson, a young woman and mother of an adorable and precocious set of five year old twins, suddenly has the bottom drop out of her world when her husband, Steve, a prosecuting attorney, suddenly disappears without warning. Shortly thereafter, she is stunned to discover that he is suspected of being a serial killer who, for the past eight years, has been killing young women fitting a description that matches hers.

Delving into her husband's past, she uncovers information of which she was previously unaware, which causes her to question just what her husband may really have been hiding. Yet, despite all that she discovers, she believes steadfastedly that her husband is not what he is suspected of being.

At the same time that this is going on, the man who had fifteen years earlier been convicted of brutally beating and raping Steve's sister, Emily, causing her to be institutionalized, is released from prison and believed to be in the area seeking revenge. Does this also have something to do with Steve's disappearance?

Things are not always what they seem, as the reader will discover. There are enough plausible twists and turns in this novel of suspense to satisfy even the most exacting and demanding of readers. This is a gripping read from beginning to end and one of the best of its genre.

This book, like all of Carlene Tompsons books, is GREAT! Her style of writing is cut to the chase. I couldn't put this book down. She had me guessing until the very end. Just when you think you know who did it, she throws a curve ball. A MUST READ!

I don't want to list any of the characters for fear of giving away the surprise ending. I have always been a lover of Mary Higgins Clark's suspense novels, but now that I have discovered Carlene Thompson-- my first experience in a book club- I then went to Amazon.com and purchased the other two of her books and am now addicted. Her descriptions of characters and surroundings are very good- and I cannot put her book down until I have finished it. The first selection I read was "Since You've Been Gone. EXCELLLENT mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars An attention keeper, January 24, 2000
What a great book! Once started I couldn't put it down and had to fight myself to keep from looking to the back. Kept me guessing until the end. This is the second book by her I've read and I can't wait to read more. From the beginning to the end, your attention never wanders away.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, February 26, 2000

Kudos to Carlene Thompson for a great book. The Way You Look Tonight has enough suspects, red herrings, twists and turns to keep mystery lovers guessing. The ending which reads like a made for tv movie is the only drawback to the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thompson is becoming one of my favorite authors!, January 2, 2006
This is the 5th book I've read by Thompson and it was great. I was surprised by the ending, and although the characters were without real depth, the plot and suspense make up for it. Also good by Thompson-In the Event of My Death, Black for Remembrance, If She Should Die, and Since You've Been Gone.
