WARNING: Contains parts expected to be replaced every two years,

This review is from: Wayne CDU980 3/4 HP Stainless Submersible Sump Pump (Tools & Home Improvement)
After my builder's grade sump pump died after six years of use, I decided to upgrade to a better unit. Worked good for the first two years, but now will not engage by itself. I can tap the float to make it work, but it will not work on its own when the water level requires it to turn on.
After collecting model/serial number & purchase info, I contacted Wayne. As covered in other reviews, the lifetime warranty covers very little of the unit. In fact, the company's customer support folks expect for the switch to be replaced every two years at over $30 a pop. The switch includes the cover assembly, and you must drain and refill the oil before replacing the switch and top. Directions for performing the switch are not readily available - their response was "call us if you run into any issues". This requirement doesn't make the price competitive when comparing to other 5-year plus models, including the time and mechanical/plumbing know-how to pull the unit, disassemble, replace, reassemble, and reattach the pump. Unless you're used to part swapouts and reinstalling a pump every two years, I would look elsewhere.

Fake Lifetime Warranty!,
This review is from: Wayne CDU980 3/4 HP Stainless Submersible Sump Pump (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought a Wayne CDU980 thinking that it would have a Lifetime Warranty. At least that is what it said on the Wayne Pumps website. It is not a real Lifetime Warranty. It only covers a repair/replacement ONCE! And only for the original owner! And it DOES NOT cover Wear and Tear! I feel like I have been scammed. I will never buy another Wayne product. I should have known better and checked before I bought it but I thought Wayne was a respectable and trusted company.

Float switch questionable`,
This review is from: Wayne CDU980 3/4 HP Stainless Submersible Sump Pump (Tools & Home Improvement)
2 months after installation, pump malfunctioned and required that the float switch be manually cycled in order to function. If I had not also installed a battery backup pump I would have had a flooded level.

Great Workhorse of a Pump,

I live in one of those houses where if the sump pump goes out, my basement fills up pretty quick. I think a river runs under my house. I bought this pump from Amazon about a year ago and it has never failed me. This pump does not just sit, but it pumps constantly. In the wetter season it probably goes off every 5 to 15 minutes or so. In the very dry summer and winter maybe every two hours or so. This pump is running all the time. I wanted something that was stainless steel with alot of push to it. In the wet season I have inch and a half PVC pipe outside of my house that runs to the alley to discharge so there is a long run for the water to go. This pump has no problem pushing the water through it and out of my property. It pushes the water out hard and fast. In the winter I discharge it underground so as not to freeze. I usually replace my pumps every few years as they wear out. I have had many other pumps and some have failed, but this one is going strong after a year. The 3/4 horse is kind of hard to find in a pump. I expected it to be noisy with its high horsepower but it is not anymore noisy than the 1/2 horse pumps it replaced. The float never sticks as it had on some of my older pumps. I need a high volume reliable workhorse and this pump fits the bill.

Do not buy-Design flaw,
This review is from: Wayne CDU980 3/4 HP Stainless Submersible Sump Pump (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought one of these sump pumps in May 08. My other sump was about 10 years old and the float was starting to stick, so I figured I'd get the one advertised with a "lifetime" warranty. The sump worked well (although it was very load when it ran) until about 3 weeks ago. After a two-week trip to Hawaii last week, I came home to find that my basement was flooded with 1" of water! The Wayne sump pump had tripped the breaker while I was gone. I reset the breaker, but it would only run for a short time until the breaker blew again. After I had pumped most of the water out (using a different pedestal sump pump), I took a good look at what had happened. The 2 out of 3 of long bolts holding the sealed engine housing together had rusted completely through and had allowed water into the engine. Obviously, this is what kept tripping the breaker.
If you closely at the picture above you can actually see two of the long bolts I'm talking about. These bolts are very thin and are basically the only things that hold the entire engine together. Again, mine rusted through in just over a year and half. I didn't expect this pump to last a lifetime, but I would expect 10 years to be a reasonble time-frame. Meanwhile, my basement has about $10,000 worth of damage. I'm had to cut out the bottom portions of my drywall to keep mold from forming, too. My insurance company is going to try and sue Wayne for their defective product. Don't buy this (or any) Wayne-brand product....unless you don't care if your basement gets water in it...

I orderd this pump on June 1 recieved and installed it on June 10, as of october 22 it has stopped working. The sump is difficult to access and Have not been able to get to the pump due to water levels. The only reason I gave this one star is because you cannot give it no stars.
No more Wayne products for me. Update, 1-10-2011. I was finally able to access the pump and remove it from the primary sump location. The pump is totally dead!!! I will be contacting Wayne today and will update the results as soon as I have some form of satisfaction.

This pump is one of the best. Although if you leave it in a wet sump all the time, it should be replaced about every 2 years.

Still working after six years.,

I installed this pump before the Florida hurricane season in June, 2003. It was very fortunate I did. It was installed in my backyard swale (low land) which is there to drain other neighborhood houses as well as mine. During hurricanes or other frequent heavy rains, the backyard fills up, threatening our house. This pump is always covered with saltwater, even in the dry season, and is housed in an underground sump tank. It often pulls in sand and grass when running. It will run from several days to a week during a hurricane. I did have to replace the float after 5 years which became saturated to the point where the pump would not turn on, but never the switch. Except for that replacement, it has never failed to operate 100%. I do expect it to go out due to its harsh environment. I did order a new pump as a spare. I went with the same brand and ordered another stainless Wayne pump.

This was an exact match to my old pump, the old pump did not give out and was still running.....but with 13 years of hard service I thought it was best to change it out. The new one slipped right in and took off. It been running perfectly for about a month now. I cleaned all the rust off the old one and check out the pump...I think the old one would have lasted for many more years....I've put it on a shelve for a spare backup! I think Wayne make a good sump pump!

My husband installed them easily after the Irene flood in my basement. We bought two of them to replace the failed ones. My other sump pumps failed us. These are working great. True workhorses..
I would recommend these to anyone. |
