4.0 out of 5 stars Great product
The pump is pumping as I write and while it is much louder than the sump pump under my house...it is transfering water from 4 feet under ground out to the street 100 feet away. Primes quickly once you fill the pump via a bolt hole in the top. I tried to draw the water up from my inground tank using a contractor grade hose, but the hose was getting squeezed almost shut...

3.0 out of 5 stars excellent utility, a little rough around the edges
Once up and running, this unit will easily pump water at a rate equal to, or exceeding, typical faucet pressure. I have pumped water up hill 25 feet to power a lawn sprinkler for hours on end with no problems. While self-priming (once you've added water to the pump itself), I've found it can be slow to self prime with long intake hose or pumping up hill. I have also...

This review is from: Wayne PC4 1/2 HP 115-Volt Transfer Water Pump, Cast Iron (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have also found that typical garden hoses cannot cope with the suction of the intake and tend to pucker and constrict --you'll need a truly ridged and heavy duty hose on this end. This is not a problem on the outflow hose where any normal hose will likely work just fine. Be aware that his model requires some regular maintenance every 100 hours to maintain warranty. The heavy-duty metal construction of the unit itself has proven solid and durable. I was disappointed that the supplied intake strainer attachment used a male connector but the female connector is needed to connect the hose to the pump. Supplying an adapter or strainer with a female connector seems called for.

Primes quickly once you fill the pump via a bolt hole in the top. I tried to draw the water up from my inground tank using a contractor grade hose, but the hose was getting squeezed almost shut from the pumps suction. I went to the hardware store and got 3/4" PVC and that works great...much better flow. Great product and it would have received 5 stars, but it is a bit louder than I expected...not a problem though since I will only run it 2 hours a couple times a month in the winter.

I bought the Wayne PC4 to replace a lake pump that had been operating for more than 30 years. When I first received it, I was skeptical because it was so much smaller and lighter than the previous pump. I had to redo the piping, but once that was done the PC4 worked just fine. I am using PCV piping on both sides. The pump is at lake level, but it must pump the water up-hill about 15 feet and horizontally about 100 feet through a standard garden hose. So far it is working great. Don't know if it will last 30 years, but neither will I.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerfull pump, July 21, 2008

This review is from: Wayne PC4 1/2 HP 115-Volt Transfer Water Pump, Cast Iron (Tools & Home Improvement)
I use this pump to empty an above gound pool. I purchased a sturdy 15' hose for the intake and have had no problems. Like another reviewer noted, I had to buy an adapter for a few bucks to connect the filter onto the input hose end. I connect the output to my sprinkler system and get as much or more power then from the normal water supply. (after 30 minutes the sprinklers stopped, turned out their filters were plugged. Since then I've tied a screen around the intake filter to catch the small derbis and all it well). The only complain I have is that rust comes out of the output side for a few seconds each time I use it. The cast iron must be rusting internally. This may mean nothing or may cause a problem in the long term. For what it's worth, I now empty the pump when I'm finished and spray WD40 thru the input/output holes. Overall, I'm very staisfied with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wayne 1/2hp Water Transfer Pump Cast Iron, March 26, 2008

Very well made. Very powerful. Two garden hose connectors in box. Used pump to purge air from hot water heat zone. It easily forced water through and eliminated air from a 100' long zone that supplied a home's second storey. I used rigid 3/4" PVC for intake as pump's suction caused intake garden hose to collapse restricting pump's water flow. No state tax, Free shipping, and $30 less expensive than local rural stores. Arrived in four days.

Wayne 1/2 HP 115-Volt Transfer Water Pump, Cast Iron #PC4

This is a fantastic pump. For a half horsepower pump, it sure has a fantastic volume and speed capability. It's equipped with convenient brass fittings to make most hookups easier. A terrific value, especially considering the reasonable price. Wayne also has a fine selection of accessories for use with this pump. A real good buy!

Works realy good until bearings wear out.
Using to increase water pressure from irrigation source for lawn sprinkling. I used it about 40 hours last year and about the same this year. It started making bearing noises the last 20 hours and finally slowed down and started smoking from heat.
This was a discounted refurbished model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little pump!!!, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Wayne PC4 1/2 HP 115-Volt Transfer Water Pump, Cast Iron (Tools & Home Improvement)
I needed a pump to water a new lawn in my front yard, since the house pressure was too low to operate a sprinkler (no city water here...). I was going back and forth on the 1 hp portable sprinkler pump or the 1/2 hp portable utility pump. I ended up getting the 1/2 hp utility pump. I pulled the water from a 350 gallon tank with zero lift thru and pumped 75 foot hose to the sprinkler. This little guy was more than enough to work an oscillating sprinkler. I may try adding a splitter to see of it can work two sprinklers.

After seeing the performance from a tank I imagine this pump would work great to boost city water pressure.

I am very happy with the purchase!

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT PUMP, September 12, 2009

This review is from: Wayne PC4 1/2 HP 115-Volt Transfer Water Pump, Cast Iron (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this pump to assist me in emptying my very large fish tank. It worked just perfectly. It also helped in emptying our 12' pool while allowing me to use the water to irrigate my schrubs. My son uses it to pump water from his rain barrel, up a hill and into his garden. We just attach a good garden hose to one end and turn it on. This pump has a very powerful suction and can empty a body of water in no time. It doesn't have an ON/OFF switch which is a minor inconvenience. Also, being cast iron it's very heavy. The bottom line here for me is that it works, it's small and it does what I want it to do, sometimes too well. On one occasion during a partial water change in the fish tank I dropped the tubing into the tank and turned it on. It promptly sucked two goldfish against it's protective grid and held them there until I shut the machine off. One thing this machine will not do is to suction up larger items such as stones or bigger pieces of gravel. There is a protective attachment on the end that won't allow larger items to pass. This is the second pump of this kind to enter our home. My son loaned me the first one and I liked it so much that I refused to give it back, so I had to purchase a new one for him. Oh, did I mention that it's very loud? I would definitely buy this pump again and, in fact, I did.

This is the third pump I have had. They have all been Wayne. I use them to pump water from the creek to my yard during the drought. They are fantastic!
