Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Staver narrates this session dealing with techniques to handle personal anger and offering ways to interact with angry persons. In spite of the inherent negative slant to the subject, Staver keeps the tone positive and upbeat, with lots of humor and personal stories. Dramatized reenactments and audience participation help to maintain interest, allowing a natural refocusing on important points. Staver's voice varies considerably in tone and pace, including well-placed pauses, which help separate segments of material. During some of the audience segments the sound quality drops, and some of the momentum of the presentation is dissipated, but this doesn't hamper the transfer of ideas. Staver's dynamic personality, reflected in his speech and style, directly reflects his positive views on how to deal with anger. 5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical and useful, October 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 21 Ways to Defuse Anger and Calm People Down (Audio Cassette)
Most of the anger-control material I've seen is designed for use by the person who tends toward anger. This audio course is a unique resource in that it addresses how we can react constructively when someone else is getting angry.

I found it to be a very practical examination of the entire process of an angry confrontation and how to defuse it as early as possible (and help prevent it in the future.) I've already seen positive results from it.

It's mainly geared toward the workplace, but much of it is also applicable to more personal relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Practical and Useful Techniques, September 15, 2002
This review is from: 21 Ways to Defuse Anger and Calm People Down (Audio Cassette)
Michael Staver gives a very understandable and useful presentation. He defines the emotion of anger, explains its relationship to thoughts and behavior, and provides several effective techniques for use when confronted with an angry person. He also debunks several myths about anger, such as "anger is a bad emotion" "that can't be helped" and "will go away if ignored".

As Staver explains it, anger is really a range of emotion that develops in predictable stages. As a person gets angrier, judgement and self-control decreases. He teaches you how to identify which of the five stages the angry person is experiencing and offers interventions applicable to each particular stage.

The information is presented in a clear, straight-forward, no-nonsense style. As a therapist in the mental health field, I often work with angry and frustrated people (both clients and co-workers). I have been able to apply the information and techniques to help others and myself improve interpersonal relationships, behavior, and ultimately quality of life. This tape fulfills the promise of changing the distorted perceptions and desructive behaviors related to anger. It is very practical and highly recommended.

This review is from: 21 Ways to Defuse Anger and Calm People Down (Audio Cassette)
This was a terrific and extremely useful presentation. The steps discussed in this presentation were clearly explained, realistic and do-able. They are applicable to work or home. Being a teacher of middle and senior high school students, I found the informaiton particularly useful. I highly recommend this to anyone. I plan on listening to this at least once a year to refresh my skills.
