NOT for Mentally Healthy Children - For Reactive Attachment Disorder!,
By
This review is from: 99 Ways to Drive Your Child Sane (Paperback)
I think it's very important to know that this type of parenting is for children with RAD. Children with RAD are their own little islands; they have NO emotional investment in anyone or anything! They do not respond to "proper" parenting techniques. In fact, they get worse! They are so full of rage and hurt that they CANNOT think like normal children. You have to mess with their heads in order to get them to "snap out of it" for brief moments - long enough for them to feel a little love. The more you play head games that invade their rage-filled worlds, the more they feel the love that is leading the invasion. This can help them gradually feel enough love and emotional attachment for "real" parenting to work, while these "breaking in" techniques can be left to the wayside.
Of course it seems absolutely insane! It is! But, when you have an insane child, it can be necessary to play Devil's Advocate in order to help him/her. I would have burned this book before I got my RAD child, but now I understand. If your child loves you and expresses it, has empathy, remorse for wrongs done, and never purposely injures others, you probably don't need this book and won't like it. However, if your child (especially adopted or step-child!) lacks empathy, remorse, loving actions, or conscience, go to www.attachment.org and get some help! Including this book!

Not for parents of "regular" kids",
By Susan M. Ward "Older_Child_Adoption" (Arden, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 99 Ways to Drive Your Child Sane (Paperback)
I tell all parents and all one-on-one workers with challenging children to get a copy of this book. While these approaches were written for parents of children with RAD (reactive attachment disorder), many of them are applicable to children diagnosed with ODD (oppositional defiant disorder), Bipolar, or other emotional and behavioral issues. Parents who have "regular" children are unfamiliar with how different it is to parent a challenging child. These pointers help keep kids thinking and wondering...just what's needed to help them heal.

Walk in our shoes....,

A lot of these ideas we have already tried or come up with ourselves, however this is a valuable book. The book gives other options and, if you know or share your life with a child or in our case, children with RAD, you need options because what worked yesterday will not work today! If you feel that a suggestion is too harsh, then don't use that one; move on to the next!
Overall good value and worth having on hand.

i never would have noticed this book if not for amazon's helpful, 'if you like this book, you might like this one' comment. this book is one of those easy little, one page at a time quick quips with interesting, helpful ideas. i read it thru at once, and it gave me some laughs and smiles. worth every penny.

THIS WOMAN WAS CONVICTED OF ASSISTING IN MURDERING A CHILD!,
This review is from: 99 Ways to Drive Your Child Sane (Paperback)
This woman was accused of helping assist in the death of a child during an "ATTACHMENT" therapy, and you want to listen to a word she says?

Abusive fantasy---science does not support this "therapy",
This review is from: 99 Ways to Drive Your Child Sane (Paperback)
This author was accused of contributing to the death of a child--one of several 'adults' holding the skinny, 11 year girl in a blanket, continuing to hold the child even after the child vomited and defecated in the blanket, holding the girl despite the girl's plea that she was about to die.
If this woman had an ounce of goodness, she would admit her abuse of her child clients and spend the rest of her life working to stop use of these forms of child abuse disguised as "therapies."

Dishonest Mind Games,

Taping newspaper over your child's door to greet him when he wakes up, and many other weird "tips" turned my stomach. I am disappointed and alarmed by the advice in this book that would be confusing parental actions to a child.

Probation, Community service, Death,
By A Customer
This review is from: 99 Ways to Drive Your Child Sane (Paperback)
In 2001, the book's author was sentenced to probation and community service as her penalty in the "rebirthing therapy" death of Candace Newmaker. Enough said to be very wary of the contents of this book and the mind that wrote it.
