Introduction: "From a very early stage in their lives the children of our times are surrounded by sounds and voices, by forms, figures, and colors coming to them from radios, television sets, and record players, and from books, naked scenes, pictures, and the like. The media are a constant part of the environment. As children grow up they slowly become aware that the media are capable of transmitting and representing another reality in contrast to the more tangible one of people, objects, and actions. The two domains, the real and the symbolic, supported by that dependable intermediary, the toy, mix in puzzling ways.
