Book Description

January 1, 2003
At a time when Old Testament and New Testament studies are considered to be two very different tasks, this major new work by Charles Scobie offers an approach to biblical theology meant to take in the entire sweep of divine revelation. Comprehensive in scope, this book covers every aspect of biblical theology. Chapters are devoted first to the nature and task of biblical theology and then to major themes within the biblical message - Gods order, Gods servant, Gods people, and Gods way. Each section of the book also features an extensive system of helpful cross-references. Not only is Scobies attempt to bridge the biblical testaments admirable, but he also takes great care to present scholarship that is at the same time informed by, and relevant to, the daily life and work of the church. The result is a book that is relevant to readers everywhere. Accessible to teachers, clergy, students, and general readers alike, this book will reinvigorate the study of the Bible as the unified word of God.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large But Not Intimidating, October 5, 2006

This review is from: The Ways of Our God: An Approach to Biblical Theology (Paperback)
A look at Scobie's bibliography suggests that he is aware of much of the relevant literature. A look at the size of the volume (over 1000 pages) suggests that he has covered lots of ground. The size may also turn away the faint of heart, but it shouldn't. Though Scobie presents a thematic theology of both Old and New Testaments, synthesizing a massive amount of material, in conversation with other biblical and theological scholars, this book is very readable and never pedantic. He presents his ideas with conciseness and does not belabor points. I'll show a bias here by saying that I found it disappointing that his bibliography included only two items by N.T. Wright, certainly one who has much to offer in the theological understanding of, especially, the New Testament.
