Book Description

January 2, 2006
"Will I be the next victim of Alzheimer’s disease?" That question haunted author, Phyllis Staff, Ph.D., when her father died following a 12-year struggle with the disease. To learn why her father had Alzheimer’s, and to assess her own chances of developing the disease, Dr. Staff began a search of the recent medical literature. "128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias" succinctly summarizes what she learned from reviewing more than 500 contemporary studies.

"128 Ways" is a small book, only 64 pages, written in simple terms for the layperson who wants to start right away creating a lifetime of good health.

A link to Dr. Staff’s video screensaver, "How to Prevent Alzheimer’s disease" comes with the book as a downloadable bonus. It serves as a gentle reminder that dementia is, in almost all instances, preventable.

About the Author

Phyllis Staff, Ph.D., is an experimental psychologist who has spent more than 25 years identifying and solving problems for organizations. She designed and carried out money- and people-saving solutions for some of the world's largest educational institutions and Fortune 500 companies in the United States and abroad.

"I've evaluated many organizations and programs during my career," says Dr. Staff, "but I never expected to use my skills in such a personal way."

"When my father developed Alzheimer's disease, I couldn't imagine why it had claimed him. He was bright, active, enthusiastic, with an unbounded curiosity about the world and beyond. Yet when he ended his days, he was unable to recognize his family, or enjoy a meal, or take a walk. I needed to know why such a good man would suffer such a horrible fate."

"At the same time, I wanted to know if I'd be the next one in the family to get Alzheimer’s. I'd heard there was no cure, and I didn't know what, if anything, I could do to avoid the disease.

To find answers, I began an extensive search of the medical literature -- clinical trials, longitudinal trials, nutrition journals, anything I could find that related to Alzheimer's or dementia. The video, book (How to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias), and this website grew out of my personal search."

A native Texan, Dr. Staff lives in Waxahachie, Texas, with her family. She is a writer and photographer whose articles and photographs have appeared in scholarly journals and popular magazines. Her first book, How to Find Great Senior Housing (2002), is now in its second edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Crafted Little Book, June 23, 2006
This review is from: 128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias (Paperback)
. . . a beautifully crafted little book about a difficult subject. I found myself relishing each new tip and choosing those I could practice immediately. Phyllis' passion for preventing dementia is obviously fueled by her father's 12-year struggle with Alzheimer's. Her natural ability as a writer combined with this passion and her ability to research thoroughly has resulted in this book that can help us age in great health and have fun doing so. Phyllis wants us to know that by making wise choices we can reduce risk factors for dementia dramatically! I recommend this little gem for all who wish to age well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best practical guide to dementia prevention!, June 24, 2006
This review is from: 128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias (Paperback)
Handy, highly informative guide to practical things we should all do to ward off mental deterioration. Dr. Staff explains in clear terms the steps to take in our daily lives to properly feed and stimulate our brains to prevent dementia. There's stuff in here you don't know and probably won't find out from the mainstream media.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT a book--Just a short Essay in 50 pages with big type, June 18, 2007
This review is from: 128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias (Paperback)
Sorry, but this book is only a simple list of 128 items (no explanations)--I learned almost nothing that I did not already find on the web or in other much better books. Can be read in 5 minutes. May be a start for some folks in need of quick info with no substance, but then you will not really have any basis to take the items seriously. The 128 items are not prioritized well, and some have little importance and are anecdotal or nearly hearsay. No book index ---I guess it is too short. (This book would be about 7 typed pages.)

Don't waste your money. Get a real book "Preventing Alzheimers" by Shankle.
