5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, September 21, 2007
By Fred Rayworth (Las Vegas, NV United States) - See all my reviews
I first got this album on cassette from a friend. It was my first exposure to Pagan metal. At the time, it was so unique that I didn't have anything to compare it with. It is a great album full of music I still remember, even after not listening to it for several years. Last year I picked it up in CD format and it was like a rush down memory lane. Great songs, great musicians. I especially like Widdershins Jig and all the extra instrumentation thrown in. The best of all their albums. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars A solid piece of work, December 19, 2005
Skyclad's debut album--The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth--was released in 1991. The material is in a metal musical direction. Ten tracks are contained. Overall, I find the musicianship to be proficient, the songwriting to be solid, and the sound quality to be pleasing. I am impressed with the precision guitar work and Martin Walkyier's industrious, expressive vocal performance; in addition, Walkyier is a talented lyricist--his song lyrics are elaborate and fit well with the music. Two instrumentals are included, "A Minute's Piece" and "Intro: Pagan Man." Violin instrumentation is displayed on "The Sky Beneath My Feet," "The Widdershins Jig," and "Our Dying Island." Keyboard playing is furnished on some of the cuts, too. As for my favorite compositions, they are "The Widdershins Jig," "Skyclad," and "Moongleam and Meadowsweet." Violin and piccolo playing are incorporated on the imaginative "The Widdershins Jig"--a song that also provides a nice guitar riff. The energy-packed "Skyclad" has a memorable fade-in intro, a gratifying guitar riff, and an appealing, ferocious chorus. The somber, laid-back "Moongleam and Meadowsweet" exhibits attractive guitar playing and engaging, melancholic vocals from Walkyier. The CD booklet includes the song lyrics and a cool color photo of the band; a smaller version of this photo is displayed on the back of the CD jewel case. The disc is almost 47 minutes. This is a recommendable album.
