5.0 out of 5 stars Too much fun!!!, June 28, 2005
This review is from: Wdia: History the Music the Legend (Audio CD)
Alot will be said about the historical significance of this set. However, it is just plain fun!!! The music is real Memphis soul. The people who are still making Memphis Music at it's best doing what they do best. It is a great listen!!!

The first CD in the set is broadcast recordings of WDIA over the years. Rufus Thomas will make you laugh out loud pushing Pink Pussy Cat Wine---you will hear why WDIA is known as the goodwill station (they will do whatever they can to help a friend in need) and why so many of us are still listening today. People from every walk of life and all over the world are still tuning in.

If you love soul you have to have this, if you don't love soul, you will after hearing this set. This double CD is worth the time, money and trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great R&B!!!, July 1, 2005

This review is from: Wdia: History the Music the Legend (Audio CD)
This CD set is a must have for the R&B fan, music history buff and anyone yearning for great Memphis Sound. The music is great!! Well known R&B artists, showcasing the best of their new music. It is a solid representation of Memphis Music at it's very best. Check out The Climates, rumor has it there will be a new album from them soon. Wise Williams, the blending of two STAX alumni with a whole new sound is a breath of fresh air. William Bell, The Barkays, The Mad Lads, and the late great Rufus Thomas are just a sampling of the music legends you will find on this album. This is the real thing!!!

Disc one is a time capsule of the first all black programmed radio station in America. It will remind us all why WDIA is the legend it is today and why it is STILL making history!!

This CD is a must have for the collector and fan alike. I LOVE IT!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Baptise 'em in butter!, August 7, 2005

This review is from: Wdia: History the Music the Legend (Audio CD)
A great 2CD set. The first disc is an aural history of WDIA, the nations first all-black radio station. The jingles are great and you you get snippets of Pigmeat Markham and Nat D. Williams. Rufus Thomas hawks Pink Pussy Cat Wine (the New York State Wine)

Disc Two is a great compilation of contemporary Memphis soul and blues. There are many standouts, especially Johnny Taylor, Ben Cauley (didn't know he sang!), and the Climates.

I highly recommened this.

4.0 out of 5 stars I remember the deejays, February 27, 2006
This review is from: Wdia: History the Music the Legend (Audio CD)
The first disc was pretty good. I enjoyed it for the most part. I think there should have been a little more of the days when they were located on Central Ave (during the 70's). Those are my fondest memories. When Bro. Theo Wade would always address A C Williams by calling him Brother Moo.

The 2nd disc was extremely disappointing. I could have done without it. If they were going to compile songs, it could have at least been by some of the better known artists, even the Temprees or Ann Peebles etc.

While I will always love WDIA, I feel that I didn't get my money's worth with this set.
