5.0 out of 5 stars Not a "best of" but a "rest of" Scandal, July 24, 2006
By
This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
Scandal may have been short lived, but what an impression did they have on me and many other people hence the desire to keep remembering their "hits" such as "The Warrior" and "Goodbye To You" as part of Vh-1's series of cheapo compilations by 80's artists. Whilst the other artists CD's featured on this series feature songs from their many albums and singles, such as Rick Springfrield, The Bangles and Flock of Seagulls among others, Scandals edition stands out in this pack because this is NOT a compilation of hits, but rather a celebration of a band that could have been great but disbanded after such a short-yet-astonshing time in the public eye while only recording one album and an EP.

This CD, which was released as part of Vh-1's "We Are The 80's" compilations, is in actuality Scandal's entire debut EP of 5 songs, then 4 extra songs PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE on CD that were recorded during those sessions in 1982 and 5 songs from their album "The Warrior". As a fan of Scandal, I am happy that I finally have all their EP on CD. It's almost in chronological order too, only being offset by "The Warrior" being stuck in the middle at #3 on this CD. Maybe they wanted to fool those people who don't realize what this CD actually is and might get bored id they don't hear "The Warrior" right away.

I'm also happy about the 4 extra songs! One was used as a B-side to "Goodbye To You" and the other 3 have NEVER been released before! For someone who loves them, this is a treat and for those who are looking to get into this highly underrated yet short-lived band, this is an ideal starting point to educate yourself.

Honestly, I would have preferred if they re-released Scandal's debut EP on its own than having them featured on this compilation. They have 9 songs recorded from those sessions on this disc, why not do it? But I understand the concept of marketing and they're bound to sell more records if they package it as a "greatest hits" as part of Vh1's series than release an actual "album". Oh well. But I still give this album the five stars it deserves, merely because it pleases us, the fans.

May this CD bring forth more interest in Scandal and the amazing talent of Patty Smyth, so they may come back with new recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The complete 1982 "Scandal" EP, a rare B side, and 3 previously unreleased songs!, July 18, 2006
This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
Scandal was a 1980s new wave band from New York City. Their lead singer was Patty Smyth. Their lead songwriter was band member Zack Smith.

Scandal was first exposed to the world in late 1982, when their low budget but high energy video for "Goodbye To You" received heavy rotation on MTV. Patty Smyth proved to the world that she was a strong, smart, beautiful, sexy, assertive, and groovy new wave chick. This sassy kissoff song is the epitome of early 80's new wave. It's also my favorite song of all time.

Scandal is also known for their hauntingly beautiful and intimate ballad "Love's Got A Line On You," and their rousing and powerful rocker "The Warrior."

In 1982, Scandal released a 5 song EP called "Scandal." The EP had 5 songs on it: "Goodbye To You," "Love's Got A Line On You," "Win Some Lose Some," "She Can't Say Know," and "Another Bad Love." This new compilation CD is called "We Are The 80's," and contains all 5 songs from the EP. Scandal fans have been waiting for a CD release of this EP for over 2 decades, and now we finally have it!

This CD also contains the song "All My Life," which was the B-side of the "Goodbye To You" single.

In 1984, Scandal released their "Warrior" album. This CD contains 5 songs from that album: "Warrior," "Beat Of A Heart," "Hands Tied," "Say What You Will," and "Tonight."

This CD contains 3 songs that had never been released before in any format: "Grow So Wise," "If You Love Me," and "I'm Here Tonight."

"We Are The 80's" is a great showcase of Scandal's songs. It's far superior to the previous "Scandalous" compilation CD.

The early 80's was a great time for new wave women. If you watched a lot of MTV back then, you are probably already familiar with new wave artists such as the Pretenders, Blondie, the Waitresses, the Bangles, The Go Go's, Missing Persons, and the Motels, all of whose music I recommend.

But there are 2 other early 80's new wave artists that I would like to tell you about. Both were so obscure that as far as I know, they were never on MTV. I only know about them because they had music in the 1983 movie "Valley Girl," which is a movie that I recommend.

One of them is Josie Cotton. I love her 1982 album "Convertible Music." It's available on CD. The CD actually contains 2 of her albums on one CD. "Convertible Music" makes up the first 11 songs on the CD.

The other artist is Bonnie Hayes With The Wild Combo. I love their 1982 album "Good Clean Fun." Unfortunately, it's never been released on CD. But the good news is that Bonnie lets you download 3 of the album's songs for free: "Girls Like Me," "Shelly's Boyfriend," and "Coverage." Google "Bonnie Hayes" to find her website to get those songs.

If any of the record company people are reading this, please release the "Good Clean Fun" album on CD!

Anyway, to those of you who like Scandal, I recommend checking out all of the above mentioned artists. I also recommend Scandal's "Warrior" CD, and Patty Smyth's CD "Greatest Hits Featuring Scandal."

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, VH-1! This is the best Scandal CD ever!!!, August 22, 2006

This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
I cannot add much to the expert reviews that came before mine, but I must say a big "THANK YOU" to VH-1 for issuing all these rare Scandal tracks on CD, mixed in with their greatest hits.

Patty Smythe is one of the great female rockers, and I LOVE this CD. Every song is exquisite classic rock! I never thought I'd see some of these songs on CD -- and there are some songs here I never knew existed. I am stoked.

Great sound quality, too!

An excellent companion piece to "Patty Smyth featuring Scandal Greatest Hits".

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Greatest Hits Collection, July 22, 2006
This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
Goodbye To You," was the name of the catchy pop tune which brought Scandal into millions of peoples homes thanks to a then new music video channel named MTV. Scandal didn't even have a full LP out at the time of the songs release but the EP Scandal went on to become the then biggest selling EP in Columbia Records history. "Goodbye To You," was a rather low budget video with singer Patti Smyth dancing around singing but the song was infectious and unforgettable. "Goodbye To You," may have broken Scandal in but it was their dramatic 1984 single and video "The Warrior" which solidified their place in early 80's pop music.

Scandal-We Are The 80s is a satisfying greatest hits collection with the groups biggest hits and new liner notes. The CD features 14 songs from the group including three previously unreleased songs. The unreleased songs are- "Grow So Wise," "If You Leave Me," and "I'm Here Tonight." Patti Smyth launched a solo career in the 80's. Scandal was one of the groups featured on the VH-1 series Bands Reunited. The group reunited and performed a small tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Scandal, you'll like this., January 9, 2007
By
This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
How many Scandal greatest hits CDs can they put out when they only technically released one album? They released one EP and one album and this is the second greatest hits CD. I wished they would have just rereleased the EP as a CD (they did back in the 90's, but you can't find the CD any place). Buy this CD because it contains all the songs off the EP, then buy the Warrior album and you'll have all the Scandal songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars this cd is awesome!!!!!!!! i love scandal!!!!, January 2, 2007

This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
i have previously purchased the cd scandalous which at the time was the only way to find most of the material from their EP. that cd contains 4out of 5 songs. so it was a good collection. Then i purchased Patty Smyth's greatest hits featuring scandal because i was trying to get the rest of the group's material. while it is also a great cd and contains alot of their material ,it still left you wanted more. Now we have it! This cd is awesome. not only do you get all 5 songs from the EP but 4 never released tracks. I have to agree with the other reviewer, why didn't columbia just release all 9 songs and make a full LP?,and yes it would have been wonderful if they would have just put the rest of the warrior material on this release and completed the scandal collection they are all great. this is a real treasure. I also own The Warrior Cd. NOw all i need to complete my collection of Scandal/Patty Smyth is to purchase her 1987 self-titled solo album, which currently at amazon runs at about $25. i guess that isn't bad considering what a rarity that album is. highly recommend this to anyone who is a scandal fan!!! even if you own other scandal or Patty smyth CDs you will not have these 4 unreleased tracks. it is a must have!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of a short lived & underrated band., November 8, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
Scandal burst onto the scene in 1982 with a 5 song E.P. that quickly put them on the map. This was partly due to their low budget video for the smash single Goodbye to You that featured an amazingly sexy, strong and talented Patty Smyth dancing around & singing her little heart out. MTV played the living heck out of this video. The backing band was great as well.

By the time they released their 1st full length album "The Warrior" in 1984, the band would quickly see some lineup changes. By the time that the band went on the road to support the platinum selling album, only vocalist Patty Smyth and guitarist Keith Mack were left from the originaly lineup. They would completely break up shortly after the tour as well. The record label had seen an attempt to turn them into more of an arena rock type act. This is evidenced by the title track single written by Holly Knight & producer Mark Chapman (who had worked with Blondie and Tina Tuner on her Private Dancer album). Some fans of their debut E.P.'s were a little let down by the more bombastic nature (and some might say typical 80's) sound of the album though it did have some really good songs on it. Sure, the chorus of The Warrior is more than a bit silly, but when you've got a singer like Patty Smyth belting out those words, YOU BELIEVE HER!

The band would then splinter apart due to constant label interferance in the form of them wanting to constantly push Patty Smyth to the forefront of the band much to the upset feelings of her backing band.

She would then go on to release some fairly successful solo albums before settling down in the 90's by marrying John McEnroe(!).

This new compilation is part of VH1's "We Are the 80's" package tour from this past summer that Scandal participated in. Other acts who are part of this collection are Rick Springfield, Eddie Money, Loverboy, Bow Wow Wow, Flock of Seagulls & The Bangles.

What sets the Scandal CD apart though is that this is more of an anthology of sorts rather than just a greatest hits package. This is due to them only having a 5 E.P. and The Warrior album to draw from.

You end up getting all 5 songs from the 1982 E.P., 3 unreleased tracks from those sessions, a B side from 1982 and the 5 songs from The Warrior.

All have been remastered in crystal clear sound.

Now, my one beef is that this CD comes just a hair shy of being 58 minutes long. Why not just put the rest of the Warrior on here and make it a true and complete package? Just think about it, on a single CD you could have had their entire recorded output!

But VH1/Sony saw fit to only include the 4 singles from The Warrior. But to be honest, their strongest stuff was from 1982 anyway. And the fact that you get 3 unreleased tracks from 1982 (which are really strong and I can't understand why they weren't put on their e.p. to make it a full length album) in addition to the B side to Goodbye to You makes this quite a buy in terms of fans seeking rarities.

Their 5 song e.p. has never been officially released on CD up until now and to have it (along with unreleased tracks from that era that are just as good) in crystal clear remastered form is a true treat for fans.

There was a compilation released in 1998 that featured songs from both Scandal and Patty Smythe's solo career.

But I would strongly recommend this over that one if it's more Scandal you're after. This is much more than just a simple greatest hits package.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'm six blocks over and I don't know what to say...", August 2, 2006

Well actually I DO know what to say, and I can start by saying "thank you, thank you, Thank You!!!" I heartily concur with the other reviewers who are glad to see the entire Scandal EP featured on this disc (including the long overlooked track "Win Some, Lose Some"); the EP has long been a favorite of mine and I still have the 12" vinyl copy I purchased back in '83. I've always thought Patty Smyth looked stunning in that black dress, and I noticed that the band photos on the front and back of the CD booklet must have been from the same photo sessions that yielded the artwork for the original EP; major kudos for featuring them with this CD collection. All the singles from The Warrior LP are here (glad to see "Hands Tied" included!), "All My Life" (the non-LP b-side of "Goodbye To You") makes its debut here, as well as three never-before-released tracks from the EP sessions ("Grow So Wise", "If You Love Me", which may or may not be a typo on the label since she sings "If You LEAVE Me" in the chorus, and "I'm Here Tonight"); these are great songs and wonderful performances by Patty and the band that one wonders why they remained in the can for so many years, but at least we can now enjoy them along with the rest of their best-loved hits. Enjoyable listening from start to finish, and yes I'm still keeping the vinyl!!!

The other reviews are absolutely correct. I'm ecstatic to see such an amazing collection of music to be featuring on this newly released album. While many overlook these wonderful hits, it is nice to see that they are finally given an outlet to be appreiated. I love this one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebration of a Great Band, October 24, 2011
By
This review is from: We Are the 80's (Audio CD)
I like what a previous reviewer said about this being a "celebration" of Scandal rather than a greatest hits CD. This is very true since they only released 1 album and an EP so didn't really have enough material for a real hits release. This CD is great and contains all 5 songs from their EP as well as some previously unreleased material.
