So crazy it must be true!,
By Ayame "Ayame" (South Dakota, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: We are Not the First: Riddles of Ancient Science (Hardcover)
My father had this book hidden away in one of our storage closets and I found it while digging... He said it was all crap, but I'd beg to differ! I sat down and read it in one afternoon. Andrew Tomas presents so many ideas that, if you really take the time to think about it, coincide perfectly with current scientific knowledge. He makes his case, saying that we can't possibly be the first race to have lived on Earth. How else could the pyramids have been built with such perfect precision with their technology, or how could ancient philosophers have known the Earth was a sphere, or that there were planets beyond Saturn? I highly recommend this book to those who have an open mind and are willing to question everything we have discovered thus far.

Less speculation, more facts ...,
By Postquantum (Arcadia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: We are Not the First: Riddles of Ancient Science (Hardcover)
This is a must-read for anyone wondering "what it's all about". Science is Ancient ... not new! This is a realization only made broadly accessible in the last few hundred years, with discoveries in both archaeology and other sciences. Really, though, this is "The Mystery" behind so many others - mythic, religious or otherwise. Most other books in the genre engage in a lot of speculation, trying unsuccessfully to identify specific cultures / societies at work behind these ancient mysteries... Atlantis, Mu, Lemuria etc. Tomas' breakthrough is simply to stick to the many many many facts proving that science is, indeed, probably older than religion. He lets the facts speak for themselves, without overreaching, and in doing so makes a HUGE contribution to the emergent process of reclaiming our lost heritage - in fact, not just in literature.

tightly packed tidbits about ancient technology,
By Rick M. Pilotte "Author of Earth, Man, & Devo... (Victoria BC Canada) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: We are Not the First: Riddles of Ancient Science (Hardcover)
Though this is an average to small book, it was filled with great and curious facts and tidbits that readily make one wonder about the technology of the ancients...certainly not what you would find coming from the mouths of conventional archeologists. Of all my research material I found myself referring back to this book the most as it is just full of real interesting and pertinent tidbits...and it's a great read.
I'd read anything else I could find by this guy.

A fascinating look at ancient science and technology,

This review is from: We Are Not the First: Riddles of Ancient Science (Paperback)
We Are Not the First is a fascinating book that shows that while the modern world has made great progress in science and technology, all of these achievements had already been done long ago.
As this book shows, many ancient societies knew many things that were only rediscovered historically rather recently. They knew that matter is comprised of atoms, that the earth is round and revolves around the sun, that the earth rotates on its axis, that the light of the moon is reflected sunlight, that the moon has mountains and craters, that the moon caudes tides, that meteors come from outer space, that the Milky Way is a vast conglomeration of stars, that the stars are at an "immeasurable" distance from us, that life evolves through natural processes, and much much more. Many ancient scholars even suspected the existence of extraterrestrial life. Furthermore, the advanced scientific knowledge of the ancients was often put to practical use in the form of technologies that were supposedly only invented in modern times. Advanced metal forging, advanced medical science, guns, nuclear weapons, electricity, aircraft, space travel, robots, computers, radio, television, socialist economic systems, and more. Technologies and scientific concepts equalling and even surpassing those of our modern world were in use in ages long past. Certain things such as alchemy, antigravity and interplanetary and interstellar space travel represent examples of ancient science and technology exceeding modern science and technology. But how could this be so? Andrew Tomas suggests that perhaps an alien race came to Earth in prehistoric times and taught early humans to use advanced science and technology. Some may consider this as tainting the book's value, as the whole "ancient astronaut" concept is often associated with such sloppy and biased reasearchers as Erich von Daniken and Zechariah Sitchin. But Andrew Tomas is nothing like this. His suggestion of ancient astronauts is based not so much on the fact that there were ancient "ahead of their time" technologies and scientific ideas, but more on the fact that many ancient legends speak of visitors from the stars. Furthermore, unlike people such as Daniken, Tomas does not denigrate human achievement and potential. On the contrary, he seems to view humanity a clever and resourceful. And most of the book is not about aliens, but about advanced science and technology in ancient human cultures. The existence of advanced science and technology in ancient times is quite well supported by the evidence. Irregardless of whether one thinks the source of this is a lost high-tech human civilisation, visitors from the stars, or a combination of both, one thing is still clear: We are not the first.

Old but Good,
This review is from: We are Not the First: Riddles of Ancient Science (Hardcover)
This book came in the expected time range and was in good shape. The pages are semi-yellowed but that is to be expected being published in 1971. Otherwise, it is in very good condition. I have read only a few pages so far. I would do business with this company again.

I was surprised that the book was so old and pages yellowed for the price I paid and came to the conclusion that it must be out of print. However, I received it in a timely manner and still am happy I ordered it
