We Are Paran Maum

If you saw the movie "Linda Linda Linda," then you know these girls. As Paran Maum (Korean for Blue Hearts), they play tunes by the Japanese band Blue Hearts at their High School rock concert. The movie is fun, so is this CD. The first 3 tracks are heard in the movie, the next 3 are not (that I could tell). While a nice CD, I was left wishing for more material.

The first three songs are covers of the classic Japanese punk bank The Blue Hearts (Linda Linda, Boku no Migite and Owaranai Uta). These tracks are played by the actresses from the film. Aki Meada (drums) and Yu Kashii (guitar) both learned their respective instruments for the film. Shiori Sekine is a bassist for the J-Rock band Base Ball Bear and her base work is superlative. Doona Bae delivers a Korean tinged vocals that are stunning.

The back half of the album has three more songs, but only Doona Bae is involved with these. Two of the songs (Aoi Kokoro, Bizu Saiku) are greatly assisted by a member of the Moonriders. Both veer more towards j-pop/rock, I could very well imagine Puffy singing either. These are great songs and are far more than just padding. The last track is a short acoustic song (Son no Barudo) and is nothing special, but that is not to say it is bad either.

There is more than a lot to like on We Are Paran Maum, but that is all there is. You will never hear more of them and that is a shame. A full length album by this confabulation would have lit my ears on fire, in a good way.
