Book Description

Starting in 1978 and ending in 2000, I worked in the music indusrty as a technician. My journey started in the bars and rock clubs on Long Island, New york, and eventually took me to arenas and stadiums around the world working for KISS, Alice Cooper, Stone Temple Pilots, and many other groups. This is my story. From club gigs after school as a teenager, to concerts on every continent on the planet. I've been there and back, and survived to tell the story. Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed living it.

From the Author

This book is actually the first edition, a publishing mistake has it listed as volume 2. I am working to correct this, so please bear with me.

About the Author

Ken Barr was born on Long Island, New York in 1963, and began his career in music in 1978. Starting out with local bands, he soon graduated to working for more of the National acts that came through town, and eventually landed his first real tour with Debbie Gibson in the eighties. This led to tours with The Bangles, Air Supply, Alice Cooper, KISS, and many other bands. These tours took Ken around the world so many times he spent more time out of the U.S. than in. In 2000 Ken decided to leave the road for other pusuits, one of which is this book.

I have seen hundreds of concerts yet, like most of us, have enjoyed them exclusively as a member of the audience. If you have ever gone to a show and noticed all those folks working on and off stage during the performance and wondered who they are and what it is that they do, I strongly recommend this book by author Kenn Barr. Not only will you discover what the crew does during the show, but you will get a first hand account of all of the hard work and logistical efforts involved in moving and setting up equipment (very often under difficult conditions and overseas), the seemingly insurmountable problems faced upon arrival at a venue lacking even basic requirements necessary to facilitate a modern performance and the need to deal with personalities, egos and overzealous fans. These are issues that, as an member of the audience, I was unaware of and never considered to be part of the background of the performance, but it is a great read to learn of the negotiating and amazing ingenuity that the 'crew' must exercise to not only see that the show goes on but that that it happens on time and without a hitch. Of course when involved in any enterprise as large and complex as an arena or festival concert, there are always unforeseen circumstances that threaten the performance and Ken relates some of these issues and how the tech crew scrambles to see that the show goes on while we in the audience enjoy the show, completely unaware of the efforts of the road crew dealing with technical and equipment problems. Since all work and no play is certainly not part of the rock and roll lifestyle, the crew finds time between shows to blow off steam and release some of the tension and Ken relates quite a few tales of wild times and the camaraderie of life on the road. 5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book This Year! May 26, 2010
I bought this with the intention of reading it over a long weekend--couldn't put it down! It never made it until the weekend. It has something for everyone: action, information, some history, some travel log, and best of all-humor. I recommend this book to everyone. Get to know what goes on before the curtain goes up!

4.0 out of 5 stars A look behind the scenes June 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an interesting look behind the scenes of concert tours. I was concerned that the content would be too adult for my 10 year-old, but the language is clean, and stories were told without going into lurid detail. It's a collection of engaging stories of life behind the scenes with musical groups we've all listened to for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow The Paved Road.... October 25, 2010
By "BK"
Once you start reading, you cannot put it down! You are given insight of what life is like on the road and the behind the scenes of concerts you take for granted. Well written with a sense of humor and even humility, you are taken into what goes into a workday with some of the top bands in the music industry (Kiss, Alice Cooper, Stone Temple Pilots, to name a few), and learn that it's not only a workplace, but more like a brotherhood and family. Highly entertaining and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS ROCKSHOWS August 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ken Barr's book is an interesting behind-the-scenes look at what goes on before, during, and after a big rock show. He shares anecdotes of his life on tour with several big bands. I felt a bit of nostalgia as I had been to a couple of those performances, and his description brought me back to those times.

Ken has seen a lot during his years on the road, but he respects the bandmembers' privacy and divulges very little about there personal lives or quirks. The book is not a tell-all, which I think is pretty classy for this day & age. I read it from e-cover to e-cover in less than three days, so it definitely kept my attention!

4.0 out of 5 stars Must read for Rock fans.... May 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you ever wished you had let your hair grow and become a roadie there is no need. Live vicariously through Mr. Barr and you can almost smell the sweat, in the clubs and feel the hangovers from nights on the road. I recommend. This book to any fan of live music who loves Rock and Roll.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not well written March 21, 2014
By David
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This has some great anecdotes, and the experiences of the author are great, but the writing is rough. Would have benefited a lot from a co-author or a ghost-writer interviewing the author about the experiences. Still interesting, but a little hard to get through.

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK Read February 18, 2013
By Dave J.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Life on the road with a member of the behind-the-scenes crew for some major rock bands. The author writes a fine line between giving too much detail and not enough detail. There wasn't enough detail for me and it started sounding repetitive midway through the book.

After a successful twenty year career touring and recording with KISS, Alice Cooper, Stone Temple Pilots and many other artists, I am now following my creative dream. I am writing books and making the movies I want to see. Thought provoking short films that question society and human nature. Books that express real emotion, the feelings of the human heart. Creatively, I am always working and there doesn't seem to be any sign of slowing down. The coming year promises more movies, books, and who knows, anything is possible. Please stay tuned. Thanks, Ken Barr
