5.0 out of 5 stars The Hottest Choral Album Of The Year!, May 10, 2001
By
A. Benjamin Irby (ContempoGospel Headquarters - [Brooklyn, NY]) - See all my reviews
This review is from: We Are at War (Audio CD)
Through dangers, toils, snares, a two year hiatus, and record label changes they have already come and the product of all of that is their hot new project "We Are At War". Recorded live and unplugged at the Sony Sound Stage studios in New York, before a small yet fortunate audience of family, friends, and associates. Making history, being the first Gospel act to ever do so. The album starts off with a spoken word "Introduction" Hall's pastor/WAP member, "The Voice of Worship And Praise", Kevin Bond. Then there's the rousing title track "We Are At War" and the majestic and beautiful worship song "The Blood". It's great on the CD but ain't nothin' like hearing it live! Then there's "the jam" off of the album the Melvin Crispell penned "Too Close". New York area soloist sensation, Bettina Pennon leads the choir next on "I Want To Go There". Then the one of a kind voice of James Hall leads the jazzy "Take Him At His Word". Then there's the Hall penned, midtempo "I Want To Live So", a nice song that shows off the choir's vocal "ski-yillz". Then Pastor Bond makes his lead singing debut on "I Owe You So Much", and then singing sensation Tunesha Crispell [wife of Melvin Crispell] duets with Mother Rubinsten McClure on "God Specializes", Crispell's smooth and pretty vocals and Mother McClure's spectacular ad-libs make this song spectacular. The album ends on four good notes, the Melvin Crispell penned, "Hide Me", "Anchor By And By", led by Gloria White and GMWA Education Department official, Evangelist Dr. Joyce Taylor, another Crispell joint "So Good" and "We Are At War - Part II", reminscent of "Control II" from their first album "God Is In Control".. This album is sizzling hot and takes vibrato to the next level!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Diabolical Response to the Enemies " Diabolical Plot", May 22, 2002
By
Markise Hicks (Hampton, VA,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: We Are at War (Audio CD)
"the Diabolical Plot " That was A phrase That Pastor Kevin Bond used In the introdution of "We are at War" and he used it to describe The wicked Plan of the enmy to fight and to destroy us Christian Saints. But The Musical Masterminds Of James Hall and Melvin Crispel came In response with the God anointed Album "We are At War" This album Is Of the chains with Minor Keys and chromatic Chords That get you In the fighting Mode. God realy used them. The look of the Cd made me laugh a little I was truthfully I thought It to be a little corney but thats Just my opinion. (It broadened the title of the CD). Anyway I've been a James And WAP Fan scince "God Is in control" And on Every Cd they Move a step of the Mediocre Gospel sound And this time they took a bigg step off. Starting with "we are at War" To ME- the choir and every thing was banging and of the chains and the song just over proved James Title as the proffessor But the Star Of the song to Me was -JOHN PETERS- yeeees lawd! unexplainable......... OK I Love James Halls Ballads Like "For Your Name Is to be Praised" and all time and foever Favorite "Blessed be The Name" His Arrangement of "Hold to Gods unchanging Hand" and I thought He couldn't out Do "Great Is Our God" but James out did himself with His Newest Ballad "The Blood" Oh Oh oh Oh Oh the Blood My God this Song dosen't really have many words but the way the song was arranged it s pause ggives you time to praise and halla and thank God for his Saving Grace. Melvin's "to close" is a tight little hype song the voices are tight I love this Cd james out did himself again with his broadway Jazz set take him at his word and I Love Melvin " Hide Me" unexplainably tight groovy and jazzy Love it

This Cd Is the Hot Mess

5.0 out of 5 stars They never let me down!!!, June 16, 2001

Each time James Hall & Worship & Praise release a new project I always think to myself, "How will they top their previous project?" - They never cease to amaze me and they never let me down!!

The lyrics in this new project, "We Are At War", are so very powerful. After listening to the CD once, I was hooked. I now know ever every word of every song on the CD.

It is obvious that James and his co-writers opened their hearts and minds to God when putting this project together.

In my opinion James Hall & Worship & Praise are the hottest choir out there today and their sound is unique. "We Are At War" is going to take them where they belong - STRAIGHT TO THE TOP!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is something!, December 3, 2007
This review is from: We Are at War (Audio CD)
James Hall & WAP are James Hall & WAP. The music is mastery. I don't understand why they are not as famous in the Gospel as they should be. They do stuff with music, voice, and chords that are insane!!!!!! I love the title track (We Are At War)and the dissonance of the voices. When I first heard "The Blood", I was thinking they took this song to four different places. Then the closing of the song is dynamic. The notes are very high, but the Tenors still sounded masculine. There are SO MANY people that have developed their voices (including me) to JHWAP. The flavor is very jazzy and broadway (songs like "I Owe You SO Much" and "Take Him At His Word"). They did an excellent job.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have had enough!, May 24, 2002

This is the second CD I've managed to get my hands on (hey, England hasn't heard of James Hall yet. Don't mock). All I can say is "WOW". Where do those musicians come from? Melvin can I have some lessons? Reggie Young - my husband is considering putting his Musicman into retirement because of you.

An excellent CD that has it all. Great singers, great musicians and most of all heart-felt worship. Look forward to y'all coming to London, England sometime...

5.0 out of 5 stars THEY ARE THE GREATEST, February 6, 2002
By
Music 4 Life (Greensboro, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: We Are at War (Audio CD)
Man, when i first had the privilege of hearing this album, i was ridiculously anticipating what they had for me this time. I mean, was it actually possible to top that last album? I guess the answer is yes. But, check out what fate had in store for me. The first time I played the CD, I accidentally skipped over the second track. This is not the funny part; the funny part is that I did this on about three different occassions. I thought that the CD was good, but that it was missing something; something that would complete the pie. This final piece of the pie was found in the second track (We Are At War), and lo and behold, we had ourselves a masterpiece. This is possibly the best contemporary gospel album I have ever heard (although it is hard to argue with his past albums; not to mention Bishop Ralph Donnie Graves and the Metropolitan Community Choir- look for this new album in stores near the middle of 2002)Anyway, the choir is disgustingly great, the melodies are outrageously marvelous, and the band is just idiotically talented. I had the opportunity to be in a workshop with the keyboardist, John Peters. This guy makes Mozart look like a mere child on the keys. This dude can't have a brain because his chords don't have Earthly recognition. They come from outer space somewhere. If by chance, you get this album, it will be well worth your money. James Hall and WAP are so underated and unrecognized; and for what? Because it's not conventional gospel? Because he doesn't do bandwagon gospel-that stuff that any untalented fool can do? Because he has real music-live instruments in his work, not a bunch of synth sounds that make me gag? This has gotta stop. James is possibly the most talented artist in the country right now, but commercialism is holding him back. Let's put a stop to this madness and recognize true talent when we see it. Ya'll be easy........

James Hall is a musical genius. His creativity and his free expression on the album helps the listeners obtain the worship experience that he is plans to achieve.

Great musicians might I add.
