This Album Deserves Major Recognition,

This review is from: We Are Wolves (Audio CD)
Wow--only three other reviews? There is something disturbingly wrong going on here! There should be a thousand reviews! Is it the French title of the album? Let me state it plainly: you folks are missing out big time if you don't buy this album. It is plain-and-simple revolutionary. There may or may not be bands out there who have a similar sound, but let me assure you this is great, great music. I received this CD from Amazon with other CDs by the Melvins, Kyuss, Trail of the Dead, High on Fire, Fu Manchu and a few other non-rock CDs. These CDs were all great and worth buying, but this hidden treasure blew the rest away.
Pehaps it needs to be clarified what this album is not. This is NOT BLUES. You may have presumed that it is, because it is on the Fat Possum label. Fat Possum is, as you may know, the single-most profound music label since Motown (at least in my opinion, and I'm willing to debate it nationally on television, starting by playing their music for whomever would dare challenge me). So, having recognized some time ago that Fat Possum is so incredible with their artist selections and musical content (examples: T-Model Ford, Jim Burnside), I decided to buy every CD on the Fat Possum label. (I probably have 60 or so now; they are all awesome.) The thing I learned was that not all Fat Possum titles are blues; a handful are in other genres. The Black Keys would be an example (although I guess they may have a foundation in the blues, they are probably more rock/hard rock in nature. And, believe me, they seriously rock). Well, We Are Wolves is another Possum title that has limited or no blues connection. So, this is clearly not music from Mississippi where you can hear the porch sqeakin' and the whisky jug poppin' open. What is this then? Well, it is twisted, damaged, insanely cool rock music with a heavy organ/keyboard emphasis. I can't quite describe it, and I know I will be faulted for any further attempt to categorize or characterize it. It is not goth, it is not death or speed metal. Okay, the closest thing that comes to mind is a band named Chrome, and I perhaps make that reference due more to the way the music makes me feel than the sound itself. (It is, uh, totally trippy, to put it in clinical terms.) This is extreme music, not background music; you will want to play it loud. It is dark but not at all downer. It is, ultimately, extremely sophisticated. If you like Black Sabbath, or other types of mystical, strangely dreary, psychedelic music you will LOVE having this in your collection. I only write reviews if I love or hate something, and I definitely feel great psychotic affection for this. I feel that I have not sufficiently described it for you. But how do you describe music in general? And this is dark, avant garde, transgressive music. To my knowledge it is unprecedented. I'm not even sure if it should be legal, so get it while you can!

this is exciting,

I miss crazy bands like Suicide and Add N to X. We Are Wolves seem to be picking up the slack. They are wild vocals and zany synths. The first song "Little Birds" has some bee sound in it. It rocks hard. The vocals are yelled throughout. ItŐs as punk rock as you can get with a Roland synth in the band. The name "Non Stop" recalls the band Kraftwerk, which We Are Wolves sound nothing like. If only Le Tigre could be this cool. There are some French influences on this record. Every track is cool. There is no waste. This is party music. They are touring with The Gossip right now. We Are Wolves are blowing them off the stage every night. The Gossip should quit. They have also toured with DFA 1979 and Trail of the Dead, and those bands seem more in line with this manic noise. Check it out for yourself.

Serious Clout,
This review is from: We Are Wolves (Audio CD)
We Are Wolves is a band that makes you really excited to listen. I first heard them live when they opened for Deerhoof. Emaculate! I have never heard(felt) better bass sound. A listener can't help but love every second of the beat that emits strength that shakes your body. Truly impressive.
