Book Description

Are any of us beyond forgiveness? A college student's sexual addiction leads to a family tragedy. A boy must navigate life and love with everything he has ever felt available for all to see on his sleeve. A young man followed by mysterious men in suits returns home for his father's funeral. A man crosses the country in an attempt to make right his decision in choosing between the life of the woman he loved and the life of his unborn child. And a couple meets during a violent traffic accident, discovering the greatest injuries inflected upon us are not of the flesh, but of the heart. Featuring six different stories, We Can't Go Home Again follows the lives of seven broken individuals desperately seeking redemption and a second chance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"As I read Dubinsky's We Can't Go Home Again I did so gripped to the pages and at times with tears streaming down my face. With a dark rawness and a ribbon of hope throughout, Max writes the stories of individuals I could have known. Or even could have become. A quick and yet poignant must read."
-Crystal Renaud, author of Dirty Girls Come Clean

"We Can't Go Home Again is a uniquely told process of discovery, painting a landscape of human angst and pain in search of redemption. Dubinsky has a unique way of capturing the inner world of a tortured soul by telling their outward story. His minimalist approach to writing allows the reader to search for and find himself in the staccato style dialogue and storylines. I couldn't put these stories down, and in turn, these stories never let me down."
-Bob Hamp, author of Think Differently, Live Differently

"[Dubinsky]...beautifully paints a poignant story of redemption, forgiveness, and home. He provides an avenue of sober self-examination and exploration...navigating through shades of gray as he takes you on a journey of honest, raw healing. A must read."
-Ashley Smith, People of the Second Chance

"Dubinsky is a natural storyteller. And like any great bard, Max appeals to our whole selves -- the broken, bitter, and beautiful. His voice is honest and unassuming. These heartfelt stories are full of humanity and sure to make you remember home -- a place full of laughter, tears, and healing."
-Jeff Goins, goinswriter.com

"No punches pulled. No cherries on top. This is raw fiction. The way it was meant to be. Dubinsky gets it."
-Clint Fisher, Aenonfire.com

From the Author

We Can't Go Home Again is a collection of short fiction following the lives of seven different individuals desperately seeking redemption and a second chance. From sexual addiction to abortion and death, I have often been questioned how I can call myself a Christian, yet write fiction which violently explores the gritty and dark nature of our hearts. We Can't Go Home Again was written to show that the light shines brightest in the darkness, and that no one is beyond forgiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars So moved by the deep resonating in my soul. May 8, 2012

Oh goodness, where do you begin to review a book full of short stories, where each one kept you gripping the edge of your seat? I remember exactly where I was when I read this book, and the way it took my breath away. I could hardly believe what I was reading, the shock at every turn. Max is an unbelievable writer; my favorite of all time, besides his wife Lauren. Thank you for bringing this beauty into the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transparent and True May 8, 2012
By Nathan
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book truly hit home with me. I respect and admire Max Dubinsky for his honesty, transparency, and refusal to sugar-coat life. If more Christian authors would take the stance of transparency and humility that Max takes, then people, especially Christians, could learn and examine life more deeply and fully.

This book is truly amazing. I highly recommend it to any adult, no matter where they are in life. Thanks, Max, for pushing and challenging me with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking, but Necessary February 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"You're going to be okay"

This is the final line of Max Dubinsky's collection of short stories, and what I found the stories to represent. The atmosphere is undeniably dark, but darkness is where humanity lies. Not in the bright and colorful rainbows.

On why Max writes about the darkness, look no further than this short quote from an interview with AenonFire:

"Look, life is ugly. Life is broken. We live in a fallen world, and I think the best redemption comes out of that. I'm fascinated by the way we humans handle being broken...that's where redemption lies: in being broken. That's why I write about it."

For the solid investment of $.99 and a little bit of your time, here's what you're getting: A very well-written set of stories that highlight people who are living in despair. Despite all of the bad things that happen to them, life goes on.

Horrible things happen to all kinds of people, and there will be a time when we're all down in the dumps of life.

But we're going to be okay.

More About the Author

I am a writer. I live on the road and sometimes in California.

I once drove across America in search of faith and God in the streets. Along the way I slept in 37 different beds, visited over 40 cities, and drank some 4,000 cups of coffee. I also fell in love and got married on a cliff in Denver. I wrote about it all on MakeItMAD.com.

I am also in the business of storytelling. The stories I write are not about you or anyone you know. If your likeness ever appears in my work, it's nothing personal. It's just the business of fiction.

Once I accidentally wrote and directed a feature film called Better Luck Yesterday. And I invented a way to play tennis at night by soaking the balls in gasoline then lighting them on fire. Patent still pending.

I don't eat mayonnaise and fear sharks in all water situations.
