Editorial Reviews

Review

"...it gives me pleasure to recommend this anthology....It is a delight." -- Sir Paul McCartney

From the Publisher

This collection is unlike anything that has ever before been published. A body of excellent poems by renowned and emerging American authors for animal rights and appreciation, it is not only the first of its kind but comprises the very best poetry on the topic. Beginning with Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn's "The Animals of America," which imagines how animals view their human relations, and ending with the editor's dedication poem "For the Animal Rights Activists," the anthology moves gently from a concern for the welfare of traditional family pets--something to which most everyone can assent--through the situations of animals for food, clothing, hobby, beauty, science, labor, and the myriad industries of human profit--aspects of the topic which many of us might never have seriously considered--and finally to the celebration of non-human animals and the human animals who work for their safety and kind treatment. And We The Creatures is a book that everyone should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Poetry, Meaningful Topic, June 8, 2003
This review is from: And We the Creatures: Fifty-One Contemporary American Poets on Animal Rights and Appreciation (Paperback)
This collection moved me, poem after poem, both because the poems are so well-crafted and because the topic of animals is so meaningful. Each poet offers insights into how humans experience animals, be they literally or metaphorically our pets, our food, our touchstones to our spirits--and more. This collection never failed to touch me and to make me think. It also reminded me what great poetry can do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, April 28, 2003
This review is from: And We the Creatures: Fifty-One Contemporary American Poets on Animal Rights and Appreciation (Paperback)
This is a really good book. Usually topic anthologies feel like overkill but this one is really good. I was surprised by the quality of poems. You would expect poems on this topic to be polemic but they are very well done and don't feel polemic. As the introduction says, it sets good examples for student poets, too.

What a great book of poems. I keep re-reading them. If you love animals then you should own a copy of this book. I love these wonderful voices on this worthy subject. This book really spoke to me.
