5.0 out of 5 stars The Elysian Fields Destroy, June 6, 1999
This review is from: We the Enlightened (Audio CD)
First off if your looking for the Elysian Fields with the female singer forget it. This is a different band entirely. For those of us into the genre of Death/Black Metal, continue on. Second off, this CD is near GODLY! The music is very fast with some slow mellow parts thrown into to keep us off balance. The violin fits perfectly with the music in both fast and slow parts. Clean vocals? Forget it! Nothing but great death metal screams here. The best way that I can compare this album to others is imagine Dark Tranquility or In Flames with violins. The music is very melodic, and fast. Buy buy buy. Definately worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked symphonic black metal album, January 22, 2010
This review is from: We the Enlightened (Audio CD)
1999's We...the Enlightened was the second album from Greek metal band The Elysian Fields. I suppose The Elysian Fields is a black metal band, but I have a hard time equating their sound with that of their church burning Norwegian counterparts. Instead of blastbeats and corpsepaint, The Elysian Fields (great name, by the way) focuses on atmospheric and symphonic elements to add to their impressive, almost progressive black metal sound. It reminds me a lot of Borknagar minus the clean Vintersorg vocals. There's a fair amount of melody (but not too much), better than average songwriting, and just a great cold feeling throughout the album. It's not tacky or overly "satanized" either. We...the Enlightened is just a classy, well put together black metal album.

For whatever reason, The Elysian Fields never really reached a wide audience. It's a shame, because I think they had a lot going for them and I still find myself reaching for We...the Enlightened a lot more than I do any Dimmu Borgir album. If you're a fan of symphonic black metal you'd do well to check this band out.
