Editorial Reviews

1939 proved to be a good year for Bill Kenny, 'Hoppy' Jones, Charlie Fuqua and 'Deek' Watson. It was the year in which they finally had a hit record with the song "If I Didn't Care". Had this record not brought them the success they so desperately sought, we might never had heard any more of The Ink Spots. They were on the verge of disbanding. 4.0 out of 5 stars HOW OLD ARE YOU?, October 26, 2004
This review is from: We Four: The Best of the Ink Spots [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] (Audio CD)
I was 25 when I saw one edition of the Ink Spots. Only the guitar player was an original member of the group. The lead singer sounded a lot like Bill Kenney; it was an enjoyable evening. The Ink Spots found a sound and stuck to it as nobody before or since; it was as if they were afraid to stray away from it and in time they faded as a group. The Mills Brothers, a similar group who had Dean Martin as a major fan, on the other hand, lasted until every brother was dead. But during their time, the Ink Spots left us with some classics, "To Each His Own", "If I Didn't Care", and one used in a commercial "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire". Some other songs like "My Prayer" were covered in the 50s by the Platters with Tony Williams on lead and "That's When Your Heartache Begins" by Elvis Presley. If you are willing to slip back in time, you should enjoy this CD. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go back to the 1930's..., September 1, 2004
This review is from: We Four: The Best of the Ink Spots [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] (Audio CD)
Being a fan of 1930s jazz I've always loved the Ink Spots (and the Mills Bros. for that matter because they have a similar style). Their music is simple but so distinctly performed. Most of the short tunes on this collection begin with a signature little, subdued guitar intro. What follows is the perfect, beautiful harmony of their voices that go so well together.

All of their major hits or "most requested" tunes of theirs are here. My favorite tune has to be "My Prayer" - a song about a man who wants to be sure of his lover's devotion to him. Another gem on the CD is with Ella Fitzgerald on "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall". Save Billy Holiday, in my opinon the best female voice in all of jazz. Most of the songs here are from their early period which is undoubtedly the high-point of their long careers.

Overall this is a nostalgic, relaxing disc - great for turning down the lights and to slow dance with your love :) That is, if you find the 1930's acapella jazz sound romantic. Even if you don't you gotta admit the Ink Spots' music is unique and has its own place in the vast history of the American jazz tradition. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Your baby, a blanket, a spring breeze, and this collection of music., January 2, 2008

Joel Munyon "Joel Munyon" (Joliet, Illinois - the poohole of America.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: We Four: The Best of the Ink Spots [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] (Audio CD)
The Ink Spots are one of the great 20th century musical groups of all time. That goes without saying. What needs some saying, and LOUDLY, is that our new generations of kids are missing out on this incredibly relaxing music. I am twenty-seven years old, and I've loved The Ink Spots since my days in high school when I first realized that music is larger and broader than the hip-hop, R&B and angst-ridden rock music of my generation.

The first time I heard an Ink Spots song was, like many people in my generation, from the soundtrack The Shawshank Redemption. It was there that I heard 'If I Didn't Care' and was instantly hooked. I bought all their music I could find and eventually came to this greatest hits collection. Call me a Renaissance Man, but the Ink Spots made my mind wander to a place I've always wanted to go but never have found the time - that little field where the wind sways and I'm half-asleep beneath a thick oak, with nothing but the setting sun and my baby to keep me company.

That's what this music will do to you. It's sweet and poetic, but mostly, it's relaxing, and unlike the lyrics of our current romantic genres, The Ink Spots sing about the depths of love told from an honest and pure perspective, from a time and place when men actually pursued the complexities of women in their entirety, and not simply just their physical nature.

A few personal favorites of mine from this cd include, 'If I Didn't Care', 'Java Jive', 'We Three', 'My Prayer' (perhaps the greatest love song of it's day), 'Puttin and Takin', and the classic, 'Don't Get Round Much Anymore'.

Give this music a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
