Book Description

Since her divorce a year ago, Susan Caraway has gone through the motions of life. Now she is finally coming out of her shell. Just when she decides on a makeover and a new career, her family members decide she's crisis central. First there’s her sister DeLorean who has come back from California with a baby, a designer dog, and no prospects for child support or a job. As soon as DeLorean settles in at Susan’s home, Susan’s son Christian returns from college trailing what Susan’s mama refers to as “an androgynous little tart.” Then there’s Mama herself, a southern lady who wrote the book on bossy. A secret from Mama’s past threatens to unravel her own peace. But not before Mama hurts her ankle and has to move into Susan’s home with her babies—two Chihuahuas with attitude. Susan would like to start her new job as a ghost tour operator. She would like to renew her relationship with Jack Maxwell, a man from her past. But Jack isn’t going to stand in line behind her needy family.

L.C. Evans began her writing career with short stories and essays before branching out into novel writing. More than a hundred of her stories and humorous essays have been published in such magazines as Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Woman's World, Horse Illustrated, and Ladies Circle among many others. Over the years Ms. Evans has won awards in writing contests and has kept busy honing her craft by taking writing courses and attending writing seminars. She was recently a featured presenter at the Carolinas Writers Conference in Wadesboro, North Carolina. After traditional publication of Talented Horsewoman, the first of her Leigh McRae horse mystery novels, Ms. Evans decided to take control of her career by trying her hand at indie publishing.

"All this means," she says, "is that I pay for my own editing, proofreading, cover design, formatting, and all the other publishing expenses. However, I also get complete control over my books, and that means I can keep the price low. Readers on a budget will still have access to my books. I care deeply about all of my readers and I take great joy in the many fan letters readers send me."

I'm not an almost middle aged divorcee, but novelist LC Evans gave me a detailed snapshot of what it can be like in this delightful novel, We Interrupt This Date, set in Charleston, SC. The Divorcee, Susan Caraway, has to learn how to reinvent herself after nearly 20 years of marriage to a self-centered controlling husband. As if thats not enough to keep her busy Susan has a codependent sister, slightly spoiled son, and an overly controlling mother, not to mention a squirrelly boss and a friend from the past who just may arouse in her some old emotions.

I think anybody who is from the south, or knows an old fashioned southern family will especially love this book. That being said if you're not from the south you still need to read this book as a wonderful opportunity to learn, laugh, and cry. Growing up in the south myself I was definitely able to connect and relate to most of the characters in the book. For example: Susan's overly controlling mother..... we all know someone like that..... don't we?

Without giving away anything, rest assured there are plenty of surprises and plot twists to keep you reading non-stop from start to finish. There's also plenty of laughter and drama woven together for balance.

LC Evans' writing style is hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud at least once in every chapter. If this book were a movie it would have as many one liners as Steel Magnolias or Sordid Lives. And if it were a TV show, move over Designing Women... all the lady characters have sass. As a matter of fact I think this book would translate well to the silver screen, or as a tv series. All LC Evans needs is for someone like Oprah to discover We Interrupt This Date and she'll be on her way to the NY Times bestsellers list before one can get out one of her one liners. I have one question for you, LC Evans; have we heard the last of Susan Caraway or will we be blessed with a sequel detailing her adventures with family, friends, spooky new job, and of course.... LOVE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! September 11, 2009
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Plot/Storyline: 5 Stars

Firmly entrenched in the Chick Lit genre, the plot of this book is highly entertaining, especially for the over thirty crowd. The storyline was humorous without stretching the envelope in a blatant attempt to be funny.

Although there is a romance involved, it is definitely not the center of the story, nor is it even the center of Susan's life. I love the way Susan's thoughts drifted to romance only when appropriate for them to do so.

Character Development: 4 3/4 Stars

Susan's character was wonderfully drawn. She was appealing and likable with an interesting personality.

Susan's love interest could have used a little more fleshing out. I would have liked to see a little more of him to get a handle on his motivations.

Writing Style: 5 Stars

Dialogue is a major strong suit of this author. Her descriptions were right on target, succinct, yet picturesque.

Editing/Formatting: 4 3/4 Stars

There were a few editing errors, but not enough to ruin the reading experience. There were large sections that were indented for no apparent reason causing quick page turns, but this was not rampant throughout, just occasional.

Rating: PG for Adult Situations

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one! September 2, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
We Interrupt this Date is a tale of love, family, and one woman's redemption as she tries to take back control over her own life - by taking a "Time out" from her free-loading family. As they move into her home, one by one, - her sis and baby and a dog, her son and his girlfriend, and her bossy mother, Susan ends up with four adults, (thought her son and his girl eventually leave) one baby, and three dogs to contend with and take care of. The situation is enough to to drive anyone out of their mind in the same situation. Then to top it all off, an old flame returns to town and she must put her family first - as always - and cannot pursue a relationship with him. Her bossy mom keeps telling Susan she simply cannot quit her present job to take on another one as a ghost tour leader. Who will take care of us? Follow along as one incident piles on top another and we, the reader, end up tearing our own hair out by the roots! Highly recommended for fun and a thrill ride as Susan tries to save her own life!
