Tremendous Potential,

This review is from: We Move (Audio CD)
A few months ago Down Beat's critics rated Sachal Vasandani as the #1 rising star amongst male jazz vocalists. As the above quote from Sheila Jordan implies, there are far too few of them (male jazz vocalists, that is; not critics!). So, I bought this c.d., preparing to be impressed. And I sort of was. Mr. Vasandani has a great jazz singing voice. Straight toned, full, with a nice range. And he cooks like crazy on track 9, "River St. Marie," for my taste the best track on the disc. But I'm giving this 4 stars because he doesn't quite own the material. If he were to get some more brightness into his voice, and approach the songs like Sinatra, he could be something really special in the future. I hope that happens for him. RC

Interesting... talented.... experimental...... sort of works sometimes,

I have say that I've seen Sachal Vasandani in concert with Sara Gazarek a few months back. I have to say that Sachal has a great voice. This guy can swing hard. And then he does stuff that is experimental that doesn't work all the time. When he relaxes and lets loose, he just swings.I would love to give this album better than 3 stars because when he's on, HE IS ON. I can see why Sara Gazarek gushes about Sachal being a new talent. Elvis did some experimental things when he was starting out and it worked. I will give him credit for experimenting. I hope Sachal finds his groove that he is also comfortable with because when this cat hits it right, he nails it to the wall. I will keep an eye on him as I think he's a major talent. I don't expect every experiment he'll run on us will work but I hope he's more dead on in the future.

Awesome Talent!,

After listening to this album again and again I relaized what a major talent Sachal is -- as a singer and as a songwriter. On this album he has also arranged all the songs and produced several as well.Listening to some of the songs -- which are almost poetic -- one feels what Sachal must have experienced. It's heart-rending. In other songs, Sachal is equally amazing with his scats that are playful and original. With musical talents of his producers and his accompanying artists this album is truly masterful. I believe with his second album, Sachal shows promise of being a major voice in jazz music. Any serious music listener whould enjoy the range of musical diversity on this album (which still feels quite cohesive) and in the end be left just mesmerized.

A smart and soulful jazz vocal album that will appeal equally to fans of Kurt Elling and Bon Iver.

This is a good followup to his first CD. Im happy that I brought it, I just wish that he was more mainstream.

We ordered this CD after hearing the title track on the radio. To me, the rest of the CD is nothing I will listen to a second time.
