Book Description

The old Yiddish proverb, “We plan, God laughs,” expresses a truth everyone can relate to. At every stage of life we make plans, setting out where we want to go and imagining what we will be like when we have “arrived.” But things have a way of turning out not quite as we hoped or expected.

In WE PLAN, GOD LAUGHS, Sherre Hirsch argues that too often our plans are limited to ones we think up at bedtime, or are devised by our parents, or by what looks good on a résumé. Addressing serious spiritual issues, Hirsch takes readers through ten basics steps for formulating a plan that reflects who we are now and who we want to be—a plan that is alive, organic, and in sync with God.

Hirsch teaches the importance of letting go and recognizing that even the most ordinary life is extraordinary in the eyes of God. She makes no foolish promise that life will turn out as we plan, but shows that with hope, faith, and belief, we can change our lives for the better and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Hirsch, a rabbi who has counseled many individuals over the years, puts their stories to good use as she proffers 10 steps to self-improvement and spiritual health. In addition to everyday stories from Hirsch's work life, as well as personal reflections (for example, to illustrate the idea of step seven, the divine spark, Hirsch tells the story of how she decided to become a rabbi), Hirsch draws on familiar figures from the Bible. She uses Jacob and Esau in step three to demonstrate how to forget past hurts and fears in order to become present in the here and now, and Jacob's ladder to illustrate step eight's instruction to be adventurous and take leaps of faith. Hirsch writes fluidly and makes readers feel as if she's speaking directly to them and never patronizes. Anyone who can advise readers to [t]ake your chicken, put all your 'oopses' on it, swing it around a few times, and call it a day in a way that makes complete sense is worth reading. (May)

5.0 out of 5 stars inspirational April 27, 2008
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I found Rabbi Hirsch's book, We Plan, God Laughs, warm, funny and inspirational. I've read numerous self-help books, but this one was special. Rabbi Hirsch's very human, very jewish, voice came through loud and clear and gave the book a personal reach that most of these types of books don't benefit from. I'm not jewish, but my niece has always had a deep connection to her jewish roots through her paternal grandparents. So, I sent the book to her after reading it. I have to say it transformed her life and, whether she was just ready for this type of exploration or not, I believe the book gave her the impetus she needed. After reading it in almost a single sitting, she ended up contacting her father and a brother and sister she hadn't spoken to in many years. It freed her from any residual anger she may have had over whatever problems had surfaced lo, those many years ago. I'd say helping even one person in such a manner deserves a five star rating for this book.

A wonderfully written book by Rabbi Sherre Hirsh. Her tone warm, insightful and wise; I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Has brought clarity to things I've questioned relative to my journey through life. Rabbi Hirsch's personal references and guidance is wonderfully uplifting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep it on your bedside table April 2, 2008
Sherre Hirsch has written a wonderful, easy to read treasure that is funny and moving. This book made me feel like I was not alone in thinking that life is not turning out like I had planned. And maybe that is a good thing. She has inspired me to dream bigger that I could have ever imagined. Everyone should read this!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Woman, I Love This Book! April 8, 2008
By Alybaba
This great book will have you asking: "Who is this Goddess of Wisdom and where has she been all my life?"

A touching, clever, genuinely helpful work that should be read by anyone in need of a little perspective and support. Rabbi Hirsch's "rubber chicken trick" is worth the price of admission alone - and how often do you hear THAT about a Rabbi?

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Rabbi I know April 2, 2008
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A female rabbi as author ought to be enough reason alone to make you want to buy this book. But Sherre is the real deal, a genuinely loving and upbeat person who has a keen insight into life and faith... and her great sense of humor is icing on the cake. I'm a Christian Protestant, but if I lived in her city I'd be tempted to convert, just to attend her services!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem April 10, 2008

We Plan, God Laughs is one of the easiest paths to inspiration you'll find. Through humorous and touching personal anecdotes, along with her unique way of presenting Biblical stories and lessons in an extremely accessible, real-person way, Rabbi Hirsch has written a guide book that makes living the life you want seem downright attainable.

BOOK REVIEW: 'We Plan, God Laughs' Offers 10-Step Spiritual Improvement Plan Grounded on Jewish Theology But Applicable to Those of All Faiths

By David M. Kinchen

If Sherre Hirsch's "We Plan, God Laughs: What to Do When Life Hits You Over the Head" (Doubleday, $[...], 208 pages) sounds as if it was written by a cheerleader, it makes sense: Rabbi Hirsch was a cheerleader in high school. Who knew? A cheerleader who became a rabbi: only in America!

The title comes from an old Yiddish proverb, but Hirsch turns it on its head: In her view God is not laughing at you, he's laughing with you. Hirsch was a rabbi at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles from 1998-2006, where she built the membership to a record level. She received her Rabbinic ordination and master's degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. She has a master's in Hebrew Letters from the University of Judaism in L.A., as well as a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University.

She's academically qualified and from my reading of her spritely, easy-to-digest book, she's adept in practical counseling, too.

The 10 steps are:

1) What Happened? Assessing yourself honestly

2) Ending the Excuses.

3) Getting Present.

4) Celebrating the Divine You.

5) Partnering with God.

6) Re-Creating Your Creator.

7) Finding Your Divine Spark.

8) Engaging Up.

9) Finding New Meaning.

10) Questioning -- an essential element in Jewish theology. (As is answering a question with another question!)

Sounds new-agey, doesn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air November 11, 2008
By Mup L
Before I read this book, I hoped it would 'elevate' me up to the level of my dreams, inspire me enough to achieve them. What I got out of this book was even better - it brought my dreams to me. It reminded me that everything I wish for exists within reality (along with a few things I didn't wished for), and that I, even on my most chaotic days, and capable of great things. I highly recommend cozying up on the couch, and getting some 'fresh air' by reading this book.
